Taking Care of Your Cantilever Patio Umbrella

If you invest in a cantilever patio umbrella, you have to make sure that you get the most out of your money. This means that you need to be conscientious about taking care of your new prized possession so that it works for you year after year.

Wash RegularlyThe first way to keep your cantilever patio umbrella in tip-top shape is to make certain that it's washed on a regular basis. Many people erroneously assume that the rain will wash the cantilever patio umbrella; however, that's not the case. Yes, rain will rinse away some of the dirt, but not all of it. And what can be left after a rainstorm can turn to mold or mildew in a matter of a few humid days. Instead of waiting for your cantilever patio umbrella to disintegrate, make sure to periodically open the umbrella, rub with a nonabrasive cleanser or soft soap, and spray with your hose. Then, allow it to air dry while remaining open to assure that the shade will not remain wet (and consequently be a host to the formation of bacteria.)

Keep Mechanism DryYou need to keep the lever on your cantilever patio umbrella dry because after a while, rust can develop. Of course, that doesn't mean you need to rush outside during a rainstorm to protect it! Instead, after it's been storming for a few days and the weather has cleared, open the umbrella and dry off the mechanism. Do this after every big storm and you'll extend the life of your cantilever patio umbrella.

Maintain Cantilever w/OilSimilarly, you may need to periodically maintain the cantilever mechanism on your cantilever patio umbrella with some kind of oil. Get a can of WD-40 and if the cantilever begins to creak, try to grease it. This can cut down on problems due to the wearing away of the internal mechanism, which can eventually lead to a complete breakdown of the cantilever patio umbrella.

Make Repairs PromptlyIf your cantilever patio umbrella becomes broken, fix it right away. The longer you wait, the worse the problem is going to become. For instance, if you see rust developing, don't procrastinate because it won't go away. If you're unsure how to fix the problem, visit your local home improvement store and ask one of the knowledgeable staff members what to do.

Take Indoors if RecommendedDuring the cooler or downright cold weather, you may be wise to take your cantilever patio umbrella indoors. Even if the manufacturer calls it an all weather product, storing your cantilever patio umbrella in the garage, basement, or shed could be a good way to make sure that you're able to use it for years to come rather than having to purchase a new one every other spring.

In the end, if you take some precautionary measures, your cantilever patio umbrella should be able to last for many seasons to come. So even if you spent a small fortune to purchase a top-of-the-line model, it won't cost much when you amortize the buy over a decade.
