Piano lessons may sound like something boring in your book, but the fact is that the right attitude about learning how to play the instrument can show you how learning piano on your own can be a fun and rewarding experience.

The first step is to find a piano that you can use for your piano lessons. The next step is to check the piano to see if it is tuned. Usually, a piano that has not been played at for a long time or one that has been moved, will be out of tune, and you may need some professional help.

You cannot teach yourself how to play the piano, if you do not have any knowledge about music whatsoever. It will serve well to know how to play to another instrument prior to learning piano, as you need to know how to read a portative, or what singing in a key is.

A thing that you will need to get accustomed to are the keys on the piano. A chart will help you in that matter, but so you know, you have on a piano two black keys, followed by a space and then three black keys, a space, and the formula is repeating. Here are the natural notes, starting with the first set of black keys: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, and C again.

You will need a lot of practice in order to get a hang of how to play a piano correctly. For that you will need method books to play music from them. Starting with some familiar tunes may help a lot, like Christmas songs, or children songs. Simple music will be easier to play, and you can increase the difficulty little by little, until you get accustomed with more difficult tunes. This will also help to exercise your fingers. Try this exercise: play a song on two different octaves with different hands.

A more difficult playing exercise will include a harmony or a bass line part. Ensemble arrangements can also be of great help to increase the difficulty of the parts you will play on the piano. Start by playing the top line with the right hand, then one or two lines with the left hand; alternate these two styles, and you will soon grow familiar with them, which will help you in your further practice.

It is always helpful to try learning from others that know more about the instrument. Taking some lessons with a piano teacher will do you good in advancing with your endeavor. Also, having a teacher will prevent you from developing bad habits of playing incorrectly at the piano, mistakes that will be difficult to correct at a later date. The basics can be learnt on your own, but, if you want to achieve far more greater results, you will have to get yourself a teacher that can guide you on that path. But, if you just like to play the piano for fun, it will be enough to know how to strike a few notes.
