Temporary Jobs via Recruitment Agencies

Generally speaking there a vacancy will be seen as short term (i.e. temporary), and will be placed with temporary

Recruitment Agencies for or or other of two main reasons:

The vacancy occurs because an existing employee is temporarily unavailable

The vacancy arises because an additional workload that is not expected to be permanent

With a little imagination one can easily see how temporary Recruitment Agencies could acquire vacancies of each type could arise. A manufacturing business, for example might secure a one-off order conditional on completion by a certain date. Or, for the other type, a secretarial services company might wish to cover for a secretary who was off-sick.

Candidates seeking temporary jobs sometimes misunderstand the nature of the situation and hope (or even expect) that if they work hard and well their temporary position will somehow be converted into a permanent position. There are financial reasons why this almost never happens.

Recruitment Agencies filling permanent positions will normally become contractually entitled to receive considerable "recruitment fees from the employers concerned. These fees are certainly non-trivial, maybe something of the order of 10 - 15% of the first year's salary

Temporary positions do not carry anything like such large recruitment fees. And so if a temporary positions are later converted to permanent positions, the Recruitment Agencies would be entitled to claim considerable additional fees from the employer. As a result, if a position really was permanent there would be every reason for the employer to nominate it thus right from day-1.

Best advice to the applicant for a temporary job would be to accept the Recruitment Agency has described it exactly as it is. When the contract is completed the position will no longer be available. On (quite rare) occasions a temporary contract might be followed by another similar one.

This is not to say that temporary jobs from temporary Recruitment Agencies are in some way "second best". Some potential employees will actually be deliberately seeking temporary contracts rather than permanent, and therefore
"temporary" is exactly what they want ...

To gain experience in various occupations before deciding what commercial or industrial sector they would prefer to work "permanently" in

To save money before beginning a university course ... or during the holidays therefrom.

To gain a higher rate of pay. To fill temporary contracts employers are sometimes persuaded to offer higher rates of pay, as "compensation" for the temporary nature of the employment.

These are all perfectly respectable reasons for choosing temporary Recruitment Agencies, and seeking a temporary contract. And, of course, there will be other similar reasons, it is not claimed that this list is exhaustive.

But it is suggested that before approaching Recruitment Agencies (temporary or permanent) one looks carefully at what sort of employment one is seeking, and then chooses accordingly.
