Test For Gallbladder Cancer With A Gallbladder Ultrasound

If you believe you or your doctor believe you have gallbladder disease or cancer your doctor will do an examination, ask you about your overall health, ask about symptoms, do a physical examination, refer you to a specialist, and even order a gallbladder ultrasound.

Your doctor may refer you to a gastroenterologist who is a Doctor that specializes in digestive system diseases. The specialist will ask your symptoms and medical history, do a physical examination of your abdomen and area, check the whites of your eyes, and check your skin for yellowing, check your lymph glands for swelling.

The specialist will run blood tests, do a CT scan and an ultrasound. Many different scans may be done because cancer does not always show on one type of scan.

1. Blood TestsYour blood tests will check for liver function and to ensure that the gallbladder is working as it should. Your blood will be tested for bilirubin which is chemical found in bile. Small amounts are normal but larger amounts indicate a gallbladder problem.

2. CT ScanThis is a computerized X-ray taken of your abdomen area and it is capable of picking up a growth inside the gallbladder or on the outside. It is a helpful tool to see if the cancer has spread from the gallbladder.

3. UltrasoundAn ultrasound is an excellent choice as it can pick up about 50% of all gallbladder cancers. The sound waves create images and thus a tumor is detected and it will also show if it has spread. The images are helpful in planning surgery

4. ERCPShort for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography is used to take biopsies. The endoscope is a long tube that has a camera and light on the end. This is a very popular tool. The tube is passed through your mouth, down your throat and into your stomach. It then continues through the small bowel and into the bile duct.

Once it is located correctly a small amount of dye is injected so help outline the bile duct and pancreatic duct on x-ray. To make you more comfortable you will be given a sedative that will make you drowsy. When the test is over you will be required to rest for a while and you may be released later in the day.

Fine Needle AspirationA biopsy with the FNA process will remove a small tissue sample that can then be examined under a microscope. This is a 100% accurate so excellent choice. If you choose not to have a biopsy then there are different ways such as the ERCP and laparoscopy.

The sample of tissue is sent to your Doctors office for both confirmation and analysis. Although not as comfortable as other practices it certainly is well worth those extra few dollars to get that price.

If you are having problems with your gallbladder it is very important to have it thoroughly checked out with your doctor. If you aren't getting these basic tests done good for you and of course do any other test recommended by your doctor.

Your gallbladder ultrasound is a painless procedure that has so many terrific benefits!
