The Advantages and Disadvantages of VoIP Telephones
|
We will start with a discussion of the advantages of VoIP telephones. VoIP telephones are digital and this may provide you with a variety of options that are not available on traditional phone lines such as recording features. Another advantage is that VoIP telephones run through your internet connection so it may not be necessary to pay for an additional telephone line if you wish to use your VoIP telephone exclusively. VoIP telephones also offer the opportunity for you to speak to several other parties at once without additional costs or required features. Another advantage of VoIP technology is that some service providers allow free calls to other VoIP users even if they would normally be considered long distance calls. VoIP telephones also allow you to select an area code that is different from your geographic area code. This would mean that calls to your selected area code would not be considered long distance but it also means that those who call you may incur unexpected long distance charges if they are calling from the area of your geographic area code and you have selected an alternate area code. These are just a few of the noteworthy advantages associated with VoIP telephones. There are also some disadvantages to VoIP telephones. Not all VoIP service providers operate during power outages which can create potential problems. Another area of concern regarding VoIP telephones is that not all providers allow direct connections to 911. This is a serious concern that can prevent many from using VoIP telephones exclusively. Another potential problem is that there are some VoIP providers that only allow you to telephone other VoIP users and not those who employ a traditional telephone line. This is another factor that can make it difficult to eliminate your standard telephone line. Many VoIP users are also concerned that the clarity of these telephone calls can be hindered by the quality of microphone that you purchase if you are using your personal computer to place your VoIP telephone calls. There are expensive microphones and noise canceling headset that can greatly reduce this problem but they can also be expensive investments. Understanding your telephones as well as the capabilities of VoIP telephones can help you to make an informed decision about whether or not a VoIP telephone is right for your needs. Only time will tell if VoIP telephones will begin to replace traditional telephone services. Right now, they are relatively obscure but as with any new technology they can begin to gain considerable momentum at any moment. Some of the advantages of VoIP telephones include the inclusion of services available through digital technology, a potential cost reduction and the ability to choose an originating area code for your calls. Some of the disadvantages of VoIP telephones include service loss during power outages, providers that do not allow direct access to 911, providers that do not allow connections to non VoIP users and the need for expensive microphones or headsets to ensure clear conversations and eliminate background noises. These advantages should be considered carefully before you make a decision regarding whether or not to use VoIP telephones.
