The Arts and Crafts Barrel Chairs
|
Way back when the arts and crafts designers were looking to create unity and harmony. Frank Lloyd Wright believed that the furniture in a house should coordinate with the architecture of the house. He believed that every chair that was designed should always be designed with the building in mind. The barrel chair was the brainchild of Wright back in 1937 for the Herbert Johnson house. The first chair was made of cherry wood and had a leather upholstered seat. This was actually a design of his from 1904 that he decided to rework. He felt that the chair was actually an architectural challenge. He designed several styles of chairs including the tall straight ones that were designed for a screen around the table. And with the advent of the ability to make these chairs using machines they suddenly became very affordable. In fact Wright felt that machines would actually enhance the beauty of his chair designs. The achievements of yesteryear have lead to a full range of modern barrel chairs at very affordable prices. Of course if you decide you'd like one of the original designs expect to get the “big" checkbook out. However if you are like most of us and your thrilled to own one of today's designs then be sure to check out these very affordable options! Take for example the Chervan line - these are fantastic! And they don't have just one style of the barrel. You have at least four to choose from. The Design Classics chair resembles the original design right down to the cherry wood, curved seat back, and padded seat. The big difference is the cotton upholstery rather than the leather and a great choice of colors. Whit McCloud offers the wine barrel chair which is a great looking deck chair. In fact once you see one you'll want a whole set. Made of wood and with no upholstery you never have to worry about being exposed to the elements. These chairs are actually made out of recycled wine barrels. Great find! Parsons offers a great selection of modern styles that give you some great upholstery choices from single color fabrics to wild and fun patterns. Get creative! Barrel chairs are an excellent choice for that special room and décor and don't forget to consider your architecture to help you choose the perfect style for your home.
