The Basic Types of Hot Water Heaters

Unless you live in a tent in the middle of a desert or similar circumstances, you have a hot water heater in your home. In fact, if you are reading this, then you definitely have a hot water heater of some type in your home. Whether you live in a flat with a large communal water heater for the use of all residents in your building or a single family home, a hot water heater provides the hot water you use for washing dishes, bodies and clothes in your home. What types of hot water heaters are there and which is best for your circumstances? Lets explore the possibilities together and find out which may be best suited for your particular circumstances.

Most large apartment buildings have a centralized hot water heater that is powered by diesel fuel or gas. These large hot water heaters are called boilers and usually supply both the hot water for each apartment and heating as well. This style of hot water heater is the most efficient type for large buildings.

For most single dwellings, 40 gallon hot water heaters will provide all the hot water you need. You can get electrically heated or gas heated hot water heaters in 20 gallon to 50 gallon sizes to take care of your hot water needs for single family dwellings from most home improvement stores or from your local plumbing contractor. Whether to use electric or gas in either natural gas or propane form depends on the availability of each in your neighborhood. Gas or propane is more efficient than electric and is available in most suburban and urban neighborhoods around the world. Propane is available in most rural areas of industrialized nations and can usually be delivered monthly or as needed.

The newest form of hot water heater available to consumers is called a tankless hot water heater or a demand hot water heater. This form of hot water heater is much smaller than tank versions and heats the water in a heat exchanger as you need it for your hot water needs. It will cost more to install as it both more expensive for each individual hot water heater and it has higher power needs.

The overall expense of running a tankless hot water heater is less as there is no tank of water to keep heated to your desired temperature, but the power usage when running it is more because a higher heat is applied to the heat exchanger to rapidly heat the water you need. This calls for heavier gauge wire and a dedicated breaker for electric versions. Gas versions just need to have enough space around them for heat escaping. Again gas versions of tankless hot water heaters are more efficient than electric versions.

Now that you have a bit more knowledge about the different styles of hot water heaters, you can make a more informed choice about which style may be the best for your hot water needs. Just be sure that the capacity and fuel type for your hot water heater will meet the needs of your household and are available in your residential area.
