The Church of the Holy Sepulcher

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre,also called the Church of Resurrection, is the most important and holiestchurch in the world. It is even considered to be holier than the Vatican. It wasoriginally built by the mother of Emperor Constantine in 330 A.D. It is located withinthe walled Old City of Jerusalem.

“And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, thatis to say, a place of a skull.” Matthew 27:33

Jesus was crucified at Golgotha, orthe Rock of Cavalry, around which the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was laterbuilt. A hole in the rock, where the cross was raised, can still be seen. Anearthquake is said to have occurred at the time when Jesus died on the cross,the damage of which is visible in the form of a crack on the Rock of Cavalry.

“And when they were come to the place, which is calledCalvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand,and the other on the left.” Luke 23:33

In the church you can also see theStone of Anointing where Jesus' body was prepared for burial. Many peoplebelieve this is the holiest of the holiest spots and choose to make theirprayers here. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is so named because it is whereJesus’ sepulcher meaning crypt or tomb, is located. In the Edicule of theChurch there are two rooms: one with the Angel’s Stone, which is a piece of thestone that sealed Jesus’ tomb after burial; and another room which held thetomb itself.

Jesus was resurrected within theChurch of the Holy Sepulchre three days after his crucifixion, appearing infront of Mary Magdalene in the form of an angel.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre isthe one and only holy place where religionists, historians, archaeologists, andscientists all agree that the purported actions did indeed take place.
