The History Of Libby Glassware
|
First established back in East Cambridge Massachusetts operating as the New England Glass Company back in 1818 later becoming known as Libbey. In 1870 William Libbey joined the company as the sales manager and in 1874 his son Edward became a clerk with the company. By mid century it had become the largest glass plant in the entire world and in 1892 the name was changed to Libbey Glass Company. We could say the rest is history since they continue to produce beautiful lines of glassware. In 1995 they purchased Syracuse China Company and in 1997 they purchased World Tableware. Today their lines not only include stunning glassware it includes a wide selection of tabletop items. Libby has a full line of formal glassware, daily glassware, and barware. Need a cocktail glass? How about the Citation line? Martini or cocktail. They have both. And of course there are mugs, carafes, water glasses, pitchers, and so much more. Libbey glass is very collectable and over the years they've produced a variety of different types of glass. Their cut glass is absolutely delightful with so many wonderful patterns and designs made. They made beautiful glassware and bowls. Libbey also produced some beautiful amberina glass which was made by using amber glass that contained some gold. The glass was often made in blown molds. They produced a terrific selection of table and ornamental wares, with ogival designs, diamond, swirled, and ribbed designs. They also marketed a color that was fondly called rose amber. Some Libby glass was easily identified because it was etched with the company name but many pieces had no markings or the markings wore off over the years. Libbey Glassware is the perfect way to dress up your table and make it look great on a budget.
