The Importance Of Roof Framing
|
First of all you must take into account the architectural constrains. The roof covers a specific building. There is no way around. So the roof itself must become an integral part of the building, following and enhancing its architectural vision. This will lead to the creation of additional valleys, corners and so on. More advanced techniques will take into account the height of the building, its geographical orientation and the types of materials used in the construction of the building. Roof framing must also be adapted to the roofing technology applied on it. Slate roofing for example requires a very sturdy frame as it has quite a weight per square meter. On the other hand metal roofs are much lighter and will allow a higher degree a freedom when designing. Another aspect which should be considered when designing the roof framing is the attic. The attic can become a living place or can be simply be left unused. This leads to more challenges as the frame can take many different shapes on the same architectural structure. The skylights should also be taken into consideration. Typically they leave a weak spot in the structure. This is why additional strengthening must be made around them. Also they should always face south in order to get the most sunlight. Sunlight is important as it will allow to keep humidity in check. Of course one can plan many skylights, but in these conditions roof framing design becomes critical so it won't affect the structural stability. The advice of a professional may be required in this instance. The materials themselves can vary a lot and all have their advantages and disadvantages. Designing should always try to make the most through proper material usage. Solid wood is still the material of choice for many roof frames, but other wood based materials are increasingly being used such as the plywood. Metals and plastics are still not used extensively as they are subjected to more intense corrosion and simply do not have the same durability.
