The Many Different Styles of Jeans

If you've been relying on your favorite style of jeans for years, or haven't actually been out shopping for a new pair of pants lately, you would probably be surprised at the many different styles of jeans that have popped up on the market lately. Whether you're looking for a pair of casual jeans to wear around town on errands or looking for something to go out in on the weekends, there are plenty of styles and designs to choose from.

Styling in jeans has advanced a long way since Levi Strauss first introduced his riveted work pants in the mid-nineteenth century. Since that time women and children both have become some of the most popular fans of jeans and the designs and styles of jeans have changed with the times.

One of the major factors in the styling of jeans is in the leg width. Designs such as boot cut, straight leg, flare other styles are now common on the market. But how do you know exactly what each one is and whether it's right for you? Generally, a straight leg will measure 20 inches at both the knee and the leg bottom while a boot cut will have a slight flare of 21 inches at the bottom from a 19 inch width at the knee. Fuller styles may begin at around 21 inches at the knee and flare to 23 inches at the bottom while a tapered style will begin at around 23 inches at the knee and taper down to 19 inches at the bottom.

There are also numerous choices in terms of construction. This refers to the way the waistband, placket and other features appear on the pair of jeans. Some jeans have elastic, half-elastic and inset elastic waistbands in addition to the traditional waistbands. Zippered closures are just as popular as ever; however laces and five-button closures have also found their place. Colors have also made an impression on the scene and blue jeans are no longer just blue. Some of the most popular colors in jeans today include black, brown, wheat, olive, purple, red, teal, orange and numerous earth tones.

Each brand has made an impression on the market with their own particular style of jeans and they run the gamut from regular to big sizes. Some of the most popular brand name styles include “Relaxed Fit," “Looser Fit," and “Silvertab." Full cut styles are also very popular and generally offer a little more room in the seat and thigh of the jeans with slightly more length in the rise portion of the jeans.

The finish of jeans is another area that has become widely open to taste and numerous different styles and brands offer several options in terms of the finish of jeans. One of the most popular styles of jeans currently on the market is the look of distressed denim. This may take on the look of acid wash, stonewash, white wash, bleached, super bleached, aged, prewashed and numerous other looks. Some jeans are now even sold with rips and tears already present. Although it may be difficult to believe, jeans that look as though they have already been broken in are usually more expensive than jeans that look as if they came right off the department store floor. The price tends to vary; but some special finishes can actually add as much as $10 or more to the price of a single pair of jeans.

Jeans are also available with a wide variety of embellishments with lace, leather, gemstones and fabric appliqués rounding off the most popular choices.
