The Perfect Slate Sink

A sink is a necessity for almost any home; a sink helps keep us safe, clean and functional. We use a sink to wash dishes, wash clothes, and wash young babies. So essentially, what is a sink? A sink - in its simplest form - is a basin that will hold a certain amount of water. In addition, our modern society recognizes a sink as having the capabilities to have hot and/or cold running water. Usually, this is accomplished via a faucet and nozzle, but this is subject to change. What matters is that there is a basin and some form of hole to drain the water and a faucet to get the water into the basin. This is of course basic. We will discuss an unusual form of sink, the slate sink.

There are many substances that a sink can be fabricated with: marble, porcelain, stainless steel, stone composites, and of course those novelty materials such as that found with slate sinks. Each substance adds its own beauty and elegance. In addition, the added benefit of each substance may be unique to that material. A stainless steel sink, for instance, is not porous and will not aid in the spread of contaminants. This is why so many people prefer the common stainless steel. A porcelain sink is beautiful; a marble sink is nostalgic.

Slate is a chemically inert material that is thermally stable. It is a dense non-porous rock. With these qualities, slate seems ideal for making sinks. Our ancestors thought so in the New England states and used slate for farmhouse style sinks. The ease of splitting slate into thin sheets to manufacture shingles from made smaller sinks unfeasible. The ability of slate splitting with both the grain and the cleavage means that thick walls are needed to keep the slate sink from splitting under normal use. As other stones were found with similar properties, slate sinks became rare for new constructions.

The sturdiness and beauty of slate sinks keeps them in demand even today. You can still find slate sinks in some of the older home in the northeast area of the United States. Even a few manufacturers still make slate sinks for installing in your home. The farmhouse style sink with its large deep rectangular shape lends itself to slate extremely well. The ease of engraving slate allows intricate designs to be carved on the apron increasing the beauty of a slate sink.

As is obvious, a slate sink may be a deviance of today's norm. However, these unusual sinks do have a purpose. They are useful to those people that want a nostalgic look and feel to their home. Certain communities of people that do not recognize modern conveniences also use these fine sinks. So, if you decide to use one of these wonderfully unique sinks, rest assured that one of the few companies that produce these sinks will happily meet your requirements. In addition, you will have a sink that you can proudly call your own.
