The Technique Of Glass Engraving

When you cut into the surface of an annealed glass object you are said to be glass engraving. This can be done by using a rotating copper wheel that is fed an abrasive to make the cuts. It can also be done with a diamond that scratches the surface.

There are five main techniques used in engraving glass:

1. StipplingIs done by tapping the surface of the glass object with a diamond tip. Each time you tap it produces a mark and a decoration is made up of thousands of these marks.

2. CarvingThis process removes the glass from the surface using hand held tools to do the engraving.

3. Copper Wheel EngravingThis technique will decorate the object's surface. The copper discs come in a variety of different sizes. An abrasive is mixed with oil and then it is applied to the outer edge of the wheel. The wheel is then pressed against the glass moving the surface by grinding.

4. CuttingThis technique removes the glass from the surface by grinding it using a wheel made from stone or metal that rotates and is combined with an abrasive liquid that is applied as the cutter holds the object against the rotating wheel.

5. Copper Wheel EngravingIs used to decorate the surface of the glass object. Copper disks which come in different sizes rotate on a spindle using an abrasive is mixed with oil which is applied directly to the cutting wheel which presses against the glass then removing the surface as it grinds.

6. Deep Etching Crystal EngravingIs a sand blasting technique that is sometimes called sand etching. This is an intricate detailing process that allows for some of the most intricate and professional pieces.

7. Sand CarvingHere is a process that uses a stencil which is applied on the glass and then an abrasive is used at a high pressure to erode the open areas of the stencil which leaves the permanent image impression. The surrounding of the stencil protects the rest of the item and the image is clearly marked so that you are able to etch away the area. It is a common process for crystal and expensive glassware.

8. Sand EngravingHas been used for more than 20 years and it was commonly used for larger items to create small images such as detailed photos. You can work with several stencils all at once sandblasting a larger area all at once.

There are many different types of glass engraving to choose from. This is an excellent skill to master allowing you to create fabulous patterns and designs on your glassware. It does however require some serious practicing. Isn't now the time to try your skills?
