The Tough Life of A Disc Jockey

Disc Jockeying looks like fun to the ones on the dance floor. Many youngsters dream of being able to be in that little room and remix music. If you are one of those who are interested in this field, carry out a little research into this work before jumping in. Just like any other profession, this too is not all fun but also a lot of work. Not only do the disc jockeys have to be good with the studio equipment and sound mixing, they also have to be smart talkers.

In fact, disc jockeys have to work odd hours and may get paid very less or even nothing in the beginning. The demand for disc jockeys may be soaring but it is still not enough to make it a very lucrative profession. Disc jockeys are generally of two types - ones who work in nightclubs and the others who work in radio stations (called Radio Jockeys).

The disc jockeys in nightclubs have to be very up to date with music software. They must be able to understand what the party hoppers want and play accordingly. Besides, they must have clear voice and a zestful attitude to match. They need to record the latest and most happening music and do it in a way that is sensitive to the dancers' requirements. The job is certainly not an easy one as most disc jockeys have to work very late hours and may have to face a lot of isolation due to the nature of their job.

When working for radio stations, disc jockeys may not only have to be involved playing music, but also have to work all alone in sound proof, air-conditioned rooms. They have to be very highly in tune to the latest issues to be able to chat while playing music. They have to keep track of the time and co ordinate music, talk show, requests and commercial breaks. They have to be well prepared with spicy and interesting tidbits and organize the whole program.

These days, with digital music recording, things have become easier. But still, the disc jockeys must be technically sound and have to be creative. Moreover, a disc jockey needs to be able to work with all the recording software and studio equipments. They have to adjust sound and music and have erratic working hours. Since the radio stations are on air 24 hours a day, the radio jockeys need to be called at odd times of the day and must be always prepared. They must have good speaking voices and a good grasp of the language in which they broadcast.

If you are really interested in this profession, you could take certain classes like broadcast journalism in college. Some technical courses might also help. You should be very good with music remixing and have a good ear for the latest hits. To get experience, you may have to agree to give free gigs and get in touch with recording studios. Another option is to try your hand in school or college radios before entering the mainstream market.
