The Ultrasound Tool Has Many Benefits

The ultrasound tool has many benefits and is one of the safest diagnostic tools in the medical system. An ultrasound uses a high frequency sound wave which is much like the sonar found onboard ships.

A transducer is gently run across the body and it emits sound waves that then bounce of the internal organs. This information is then sent back to the computer where it is recorded and displayed on the monitor screen.

The ultrasound is a common tool used during pregnancy and even after being used for many years it is still not without controversy. Some health care professionals believe that all pregnant woman should be screened with an ultrasound for problems while others believe that use should be kept to a minimal because overall health risks have not yet been established.

An ultrasound is used to:

1. Confirm a pregnancy2. Check for multiple fetuses such as twins3. Monitor the growth of the fetus4. Determining the age, size, and maturity of the fetus5. Determining the health of the fetus6. Detect problems such as kidney malformation, spina bifida, intestine or limb defects, and heart malformations7. Detect the amount of amniotic fluid8. Check the position of the fetus9. Determine where the placenta is.10. Used as a guide during procedures such as amniocentesis or CVS

Preparing for an ultrasound is one of the easiest around. You will need to ensure your bladder is full so that the pictures of your baby are nice and clear. This is especially important in the earlier months.

About 2 hours before your appointment drink 4 to 6 full glasses of water. Arrive for your appointment at the scheduled time. Wear loose clothing and a shirt that provides easy access.

The technician will have you lie on your back and then slide your pants down and open your shirt to expose your belly. The technician will cover your belly with a special gel then pass a hand held transducer gently across the belly. You may feel a gentle pressure but there is no pain.

The images will appear on the screen and your technician will evaluate them. They will be saved and later your doctor will also evaluate them. To your untrained eye they might not look like much but your technician will help point out your baby if you ask.

The ultrasound is an essential tool for determining the health of your baby and to intervene at an early stage if necessary. It is also a helpful tool to tell your doctor about the baby's position, how far you are in your pregnancy, and if baby has enough room.

There are no health risks associated with the ultrasound but there are no studies that show the long term risks to your baby. It is believed to be safe but use in moderation as a medical tool only.

The ultrasound tool is an excellent addition to the tools of the medical professionals to help ensure both mom and baby remain healthy throughout the pregnancy. It won't be long before that tiny little dot becomes a beautiful full term baby.
