The Untold Story of Gold Jewelry

Gold jewelry. We all know what it is and almost all of us will own some gold jewelry. How many pieces do you have? More importantly do you know the untold story of gold jewelry?

Gold was the first metal known to man and it has been traced back as far as 3600 BC. It is believe to have originated in Egypt. Almost all the early rock carvings in Egypt depict the ancient method of retrieving gold from the earth.

The writings of Homer, Sophocles, Herodotus, Pliny and many others frequently mention gold. Even the bible has several references to the precious metal gold. The book of Genesis says that in the twentieth century BC when Abraham went out to Egypt he was very rich in gold and silver dust and ingots. In Exodus XXV, 29, there is a reference to Moses who was commanded by the Lord to make spoons of gold for the Tabernacle.

Gold is one of those natural phenomena's that isn't completely understood. It is found all around the world in water, in the ice of Alaska, in the sand of South Africa, in the rivers of Canada, and in the quartz of Colorado. It is mined several different ways and can even be found in nugget form lying on the shores of a river or in the crevices of a mountain. It is usually alloyed with silver or iron. The purest gold found has been from 96 to 99% pure.

It is not only intriguing it is also rather remarkable that all of the races of mankind have selected gold as the first and chief representative of value. Even in the earliest times it was used as a medium of exchange in the form of bars, spikes and rings. It was the equivalent of our current money. In fact today it is still considered a currency.

From the earliest times gold was also for personal ornaments. Even savage ill equipped tribes were able to easily pound out pure gold circlets to adorn their limbs. Later the designs and creations more resembled jewelry with adornments for the ears and neck often made of gold. As time passed it became a status symbol for the wealthy and royalty.

Universally gold has always been preferred to other metals. This is for many reasons. Its color and luster, its malleability and its strong characteristics. Gold does not tarnish nor can it be destroyed, although it can wear thin.

Pure gold is way too soft for use in jewelry so it is often alloyed with other metals such as silver and copper. Pure silver has a brilliant white color and is the whitest of all metals.

Some jewelry is made from 24k gold but most jewelry is made of 14k or 10k gold for durability and strength. All gold jewelry should have an impressed mark. Watch for jewelry that is gold plated or gold filled. Although this jewelry does have a light layer of gold bonded to another metal, it doesn't take too long before the gold starts to wear away. That said if you are looking for a low cost gorgeous ring or necklace there is nothing wrong with buying gold plate or fill.

Jewelry made from gold can be found in any jewelry store. Some department stores even carry gold jewelry. Gold is used to make chains, charms, pendants, rings, earrings, and every other type of jewelry you can think of. It ranges in price depending on where you buy it. With the internet you can get some great buys from some very reputable companies.

Gold jewelry has a very high mark up on it. In fact most jewelry does and always has. This is changing quickly as more people opt to sell their jewelry through the internet where competition is stiff. As well many online sellers have fewer costs because they run a warehouse style operation. This allows them to pass the savings on to the consumer.
