The Weather Outside Is So Frightful

Springtime brings crazy weather to a lot of parts of the country, particularly in the Midwest. Warm moist air clashes with cool dry air causing thunderstorms and spawning tornadoes, which can also lead to flooding. These conditions always have the possibility of wreaking havoc on a property management company.

Many communities have sirens, holdovers from the cold war days of the 1950s, to warn of severe weather. Other towns rely on weather radios, which emit an alert signal in the event of a possible tornado. Almost everyone has access to some type of a radio or television or the internet for any weather information. But knowing what to do in the event of stormy weather is just as important, saving both lives and property.

Mobile home parks are extremely susceptible to damage from high winds and tornados. The property management company of a mobile home park needs to let tenants know ahead of time what to do in case of any potential inclement weather. The residents need to know about a nearby community center or school or church that is equipped with a basement or a fallout shelter where they can go when there are any thunderstorm or tornado watches in the area. And the tenants should be informed before hand by the property management company as to what to do if the situation is imminent, and a tornado warning has been issued. It is essential that anyone in a mobile home leave the structure immediately and take shelter, since trailers are extremely vulnerable to this type of weather. This can be a matter of life and death.

Flash flooding is more common in the springtime than tornados, and needs to be taken just as seriously. A property management company knows from experience that a flash flood can occur almost immediately, seemingly out of nowhere. A seemingly harmless looking creek can cause destruction in just a matter of minutes. It can turn into a raging waterway that is capable of carry logs and even cars with it.

A property management company that has tenants living in low lying areas needs to make them aware as to what to do in the event of a flood. Valuables should be moved to an upper floor, or removed from the home entirely. Propane and natural gas should be shut off because if the pilot lights go out then the home could potentially explode. Sometimes sandbags need to be filled and strategically placed around the area with the aid of the property management company.

With thunderstorms always comes lightening. And oftentimes lightening can cause a fire. A property management company needs to be sure that any place overly susceptible to lightening strikes be outfitted with a lightening rod to prevent any problems. And of course the property management company needs to make certain that all homes and structures are equipped with working smoke alarms and fire extinguishers, in the unfortunate event that something is struck by the lightning. Fires often occur while people are sleeping, so there needs to be a working fire alarm on every floor, and inside and outside of all sleeping areas.

Obviously a property management company is not able to control the weather, but they can create as safe of an environment as possible for their tenants. A responsible property management company needs to remember that, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
