The beauty and durability of laminate hardwood flooring

There are of course many flooring surfaces to choose from, from the most mundane to the most exotic. However, year after year, in survey after survey, laminate hardwood flooring has remained a favorite choice for homeowners around the country. No matter what type of home you own, chances are it could benefit from the installation of a quality laminate hardwood floor.

Laminate hardwood flooring certainly has a great many important benefits, not the least of which is its legendary durability. A properly installed and properly cared for laminate hardwood floor can last for years or even decades, and laminate floors are generally easy to care for as well. When you also consider that laminate hardwood floors are among the most beautiful and elegant on the market, it is easy to see why they are so consistently popular.

Some homeowners may live in a home with a laminate hardwood flooring surface that has seen better days. When the old hardwood floor is looking bad there is always the temptation to simply cover it up with wall to wall carpeting, but in most cases it will be just as cheap to simply refinish the existing laminate hardwood floor and bring it back to life. In addition, refinishing the hardwood floor will result in a much more attractive and useful flooring surface than simply covering up the problem with carpet. While the carpet may need to be replaced after only a couple of years, the hardwood floor can be around for many years, making it a far more cost effective flooring choice in the long run.

Of course not every homeowner will have a preexisting hardwood flooring surface just waiting to be refinished. If you want to install your own new laminate hardwood flooring, one of your first stops should be the local hardware store, flooring outlet or home improvement warehouse. These stores will likely have lots of different patterns of laminate hardwood floors to choose from, so it is a good idea to have an idea of the type of look you are trying to achieve. For instance, do you want a light and airy look and feel, or a warm and cozy appearance? What type of wood grain is best? What pattern would look best in your home? Having the answers to these questions in mind as you shop will make finding the right pattern a lot easier.

It is also important to determine if you would prefer to purchase the laminate hardwood floor unfinished and finish it yourself, or choose from the store's selection of pre-finished hardwood floors. Both approaches have their good and bad points. While an unfinished hardwood floor will typically be less expensive, you will of course need to buy the stains and finishes to complete it. On the other hand a pre-finished hardwood floor will be faster to install, but many shoppers find the choice of patterns somewhat limited. It is important to consider the advantages and disadvantages of both approaches before making a final decision.
