The importance of the luggage tag

Few elements of packing are more important than the simple luggagetag. Having a properly filled out luggage tag attached to your bagscan mean the difference between a ruined vacation and a successfulone. Without a luggage tag to identify your bags, you could end upspending the first few days of your vacation scrounging for things towear. If, however, your luggage tag contains the proper information, you can be relaxing on the beach with your bag at your side.

One of the most important functions of the luggage tag, and one thatis often overlooked, is the ability to differentiate your luggage from allthe others. Any traveler who has ever stared out at the seeminglyendless sea of identical black suitcases understands just what animportant function the luggage tag really serves.

The time to put that distinctive tag to work, of course, is before youleave home. Many experienced travelers prefer to purchase a luggagetag in a bright, vibrant color, like orange, red or yellow. These brightcolors help make the bag stand out among all the similar looking bagsat the airport.

It is important or every traveler to know what to include, and just asimportantly, what not to include, when filling out their luggage tag. Itis important that every bag, from the smallest carryon bag to thelargest suitcase and garment bag, be properly tagged. While taggingis more closely associated with checked baggage, it is important forthe bags you carry on the airplane with you to carry identification aswell. It is all too easy to inadvertently grab the wrong carryon orbriefcase, and an identifying luggage tag will help your bag to find itsway back home.

What to include on the luggage tagMany travelers are unsure of what to include on a luggage tag. Themost important things to include when filling out the luggage taginclude:

- Your name - this one is pretty obvious- The address of your office - it is generally a bad idea to includeyour home address on a luggage tag. Having a lost bag shippedto your business address can be more of a hassle, but it is a lotsafer.- Your cell phone number or the phone number of your office. Thereasons for keeping your home phone number of the luggage tagare the same as those for keeping your home address toyourself. It is possible for a determined individual to use yourphone number to draw a map to your door. It is much safer tohave those who find your bag contact you at the office, or viayou cell phone.

What to leave off the tagIt is just as important to know what to leave off of the luggage tag.The luggage tag should not contain any personal information like theaddress of your home or the address of your hotel room. It is best tokeep only basic information, like your name and a number where youcan be reached, when filling out your luggage tag. After all, thepurpose of the luggage tag is to return your bag safely to you, and asimple name and cell phone number will help it do just that.
