The way the bar girl scene in Patong works is relatively straightforward. To express it in its most basic form, men go to Patong, find a girl who meets their requirements and strike a deal for "short time" or "long time". Short time is for a quick romp, whereas long time means that the girl stays over in the customer's apartment or hotel room. Romantic, right? But where are these Phuket bar girls, you might ask? In Patong, they're everywhere. Take a walk along Soi Bangla and you'll see bar girls all over the place, mostly in beer bars. The beer bars are curious places. There are rows of them, with hordes of bar girls serving drinks and chatting to customers. It's a confidence game, really, as the bar girls will talk sweetly and offer compliments at every opportunity. Be aware, though, that almost every bar girl you talk to will expect you to buy her a drink at some point. These "lady drinks" are usually overpriced. Many men also get suckered into games of Connect 4. These girls are hustlers and the inevitable drink wager will be brought up after a few games. Girls working at bars can only go home with a customer if he pays the bar fine, which is a fee paid to the bar that gives the girl the night off. That isn't the end of the money exchange, however. The fee for the girl must then be negotiated. This is typically between 1,000 and 3,000 baht, but it can really be anything depending on the situation. There are a large number of prostitutes at the discos in Patong. However, just because a girl is out partying in Patong doesn't mean she is selling sex. Far too many times drunk tourists ask "how much?" to bewildered ladies out partying with their friends. As you walk through Soi Bangla, you'll likely notice a large number of girls hanging around calling out to passers by. These prostitutes are known as "freelancers" and they usually go on the prowl late at night if they haven't found a customer. A large number of ladyboys also work the streets of Patong. The ladyboys are often more forthcoming than the ladies and they will grab men as they walk buy or even show a bit of flesh to catch someone's eye. There are regular reports of ladyboys pick-pocketing men with their diversionary flashing tactics, so have your wits about you. Prostitution is run as a legitimate industry in Phuket. It makes the island a huge amount of money, but that doesn't mean it's glamorous. If you're likely to be offended by it then visit any other part of Phuket than Patong.
