The value of spironolactone acne treatments

There are many acne treatments on the market, but spironolactone acne treatments are quickly gaining favor as one of the best ways to treat acne and other conditions of the scalp, hair and skin. In addition to acne, spironolactone has also shown promise at treating both hair loss and excessive hair growth. This medication is an antiangdrogen, a product that blocks mail hormones, and it also has a mild estrogenic effect.

Spironolactone started life as a medication for high blood pressure, and it has established a long history of safety and effectiveness for that purpose. The exact mechanism by which spironolactone acne treatments work is unknown, but it is known that the drug does not affect the blood pressure of those whose blood pressure is normal, making it safe to use as an acne treatment.

When using a spironolactone acne treatment, improvement is usually seen within two to four months, and the oiliness of the skin will decrease as a result of treatment. The dose of spironolactone used for acne treatment is typically between 25 and 150 mg per day, and the drug can safely be taken for up to one or two years, providing that periodic rest periods are given where the drug is not taken.

There are of course some people who should not take spironolactone acne treatments, including pregnant women. Women who are of child bearing age but not pregnant should be sure to use a reliable method of birth control when taking the drug, since this medication can cause birth defects in male fetuses. In addition, those who have increased levels of potassium or serious kidney problems should avoid taking the drug.

There are a number of possible side effects to watch out for when taking spironolactone, including increased urination and increases in potassium levels. Symptoms of increased potassium levels can include irregular heartbeat, leg cramps, excess thirst, mouth dryness, drowsiness, weakness and headache. In addition, due to its estrogenic effects spironolactone acne treatment can increase fertility, providing another reason for effective birth control when taking the drug.
