Thesaurus Resource Tips

A thesaurus can be handy to have on hand for almost anyone, whether you are actively engaged in pursuing an education or not. Somewhat different than a dictionary, the purpose of a thesaurus is to store information related to similar or opposite meanings of words. The first thesaurus was published in 1852 and since then has become a standard among students, writers and anyone else who finds that they need to frequently understand the complexities of the written and spoken language.

There are several different types of thesaurus resources available that provide many advantages, based on their intended purpose. The most traditional type of thesaurus resource is the standard printed version. These types of thesaurus are commonly arranged in alphabetical order; which makes them extremely easy to use. Printed dictionaries can also be found with a thesaurus included; providing even more advantages.

Thesaurus resources can also be found on-line and are also very easy and convenient to use. Besides the fact that many of these resources are free; most on-line thesaurus resources give you the ability to perform a quick search function; which eliminates the need to flip back and forth through a book. The downside is that you need to have the accurate spelling in order for this function to work accurately.

Most word processing programs also contain a thesaurus resource function; which is tremendously convenient when involved in a project. The downside to these types of thesaurus resources is that they may not be very comprehensive.

Other types of thesaurus resources are available such as those that are organized around central themes. Examples of themed thesauruses include those related to specific industries such as music, law and medicine.

When deciding which type of thesaurus would be best, it’s important to take several factors into consideration. One of the first you will want to give some thought to is how important convenience is to you in a thesaurus. If convenience rates high at the top of your list you might want to consider using either an online thesaurus or one that comes with a word processing program. On the other hand, if you frequently work on the go and a standard pocket size thesaurus resource may suit your needs better. This is also true if you find that you commonly need to use a dictionary. Many thesaurus resources are also combine with a dictionary to create a two-in one resource. You should also consider how comprehensive you need a thesaurus to be for the purpose you have in mind. Thesaurus come in a variety of levels, including those that are pocket sized and contain only a few thousand entries to those that are very comprehensive and have hundreds of thousands of listings.

Also, think about the number of antonyms and synonyms you would like to have listed with each listing. This is important to remember because some thesaurus resources only have a few of each listed while others are much more comprehensive. If you are a professional writer or working on a writing project you may find that a more comprehensive thesaurus resource suits your needs better.

Keep in mind when choosing a thesaurus resource that it’s important to make a note of how up to date the resource is. If you choose a resource that is not up to date, you may find that it does not contain some of the more modern terms and listings.

Finally, consider whether you want a thesaurus resource with any added features such as sections that are mean to improve your vocabulary, assist with word games or assist with foreign words or phrases.
