Being a mother for the second time is always equivalent with a lot of happiness and excitement. But there are also cautions to be taken, as a second pregnancy is different from a first one, and the changes in your body may differ. Here are the things you should know about your second pregnancy and how you can take care of yourself. Differences - You will still have morning sickness, although as not severe as you had on your first one.- Having a second baby is always more demanding, so taking care of your health and state of fatigue is a must; also, you need to protect your pelvic joints by sleeping on one side.- As your uterus already enlarged one time before, now you will notice your womb swelling earlier and at a faster pace.- Your labor will span for a decreased period of time than before. Your muscles are already used with the dilatation and you will give birth easier than the first time.- You will experience powerful uterus contractions than before after you will give birth; some pain relievers will help you through the pain. How you and your family will handle this - There is a certain lack of worry compared with the first time, when you are expecting your second child. You already have a kid to look after, so you will be quite busy most of the time. As you know most of what to expect, you will not be as anxious as before. Of course, the new born will be cared for a lot after birth, so do not feel guilty that you are not as preoccupied as you were with your first.- You may feel guilty, however, for not being able to spend enough time with the rest of the family, your husband and your child, but this is their opportunity to help you around.- A second child is nothing to keep away from your first born. You must talk to him or her and explain that they are going to have a little brother or sister. If you manage to give your kid a role in your second pregnancy, they will feel valued and cared for. The first child must always take part in the arrival of the second child, so they do not feel neglected and replaced. Possible complications - There are factors that can influence your health on your second pregnancy. Extra weight can cause high blood pressure, or a type of diabetes. Pre-eclampsia, still birth, or toxemia, also can occur.- Taking a look at your first pregnancy can help you with the second. If your first born was premature, or you suffer from diabetes, or high blood pressure, then pre-eclampsia may appear. The thing it does is that it restricts the amount of blood flow into the placenta, leading to serious complications.- Another complication is called Rh-disease. If your blood is Rh negative, and the first child was Rh positive, then a part of the blood cells from the baby can pass to the mother. In the second pregnancy, these blood cells can enter the placenta and destroy cells in the other fetus, killing it. There is a preventive solution to this: it is called Rhogam and it is injected in the mother after the first pregnancy. Your second pregnancy should be easier than your first. You know what to expect, what you are dealing with, you have less reasons to be scared and you just need to follow well known routines. Of course, novelties appear every day, and you can always take new tests to see if everything goes ok. Take some Lamaze classes and eat well. Get in touch with other moms and you will feel better. Remember, it is always easier the second time around.
