Oahu is the most popular island in the Hawaiian chain, and also the most populous. Oahu lays claim to having the state capitol of Honolulu, and most of the islands’ bars and tourist attractions. The Honolulu International Airport has flights coming in from all over the world, and is by far the best and most economical way to reach the island. The USS Arizona and the Battleship Missouri are the two largest memorials. If you are a history buff, these are not to be missed. Each memorial is open from 9am on (7:30am for the USS Arizona), and are open year-round excep Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. For Haiwaiian culture the best option is the Bishop Museum, founded in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop. There is an excellent standing collection of Hawaiian artifacts and cultural stories, as well as a new science exhibit on volcanoes.
Beyond the beaches, museums, and memorials lie many culinary delights. For mid-range Hawaiian food that most tourists will never see, Ono Hawaiian Foods is an excellent choice. They offer many Hawaiian dishes at very cheap prices. If you are looking to splurge on an expensive meal, Elua and Alan Wong’s Restaurant are very popular with both tourists and locals alike. Be prepared with reservations for both restaurants, as they tend to be busy year-round and booked solid. For drinks the Mai Tai Bar is very popular, voted best bar in Honolulu multiple times. The best times to go are Wednesdays and weekends, when they have live local music playing. Lodging runs the gamut from cheap to expensive, with everything in between.
There are many great places to stay on the island. You can find simple beach bungalows to luxurious resorts. The Kahala Hotel & Resort offers 5-star digs and all the pampering you would expect want, while the Best Western Plaza Hotel offers kid-friendly accommodations with an outdoor pool, conference center, and complimentary breakfast buffet.
