Thrush in Babies
|
Many babies have thrush, but it is a self-limited condition; it goes away all by itself, without anyone ever knowing the baby had thrush in the first place. However, certain changes in baby or its environment can cause the thrush to be exacerbated. Antibiotics or stress can be to blame. Mothers who take antibiotics during the pregnancy or following the birth may be more likely to experience thrush in their own bodies and in their babies. Because the good bacteria in the intestine is killed by the antibiotic, the yeast is allowed to overgrow in the mother and baby's systems. In most of the cases, thrush goes away by itself. The only treatment is to mitigate oral discomfort. You also need to treat sore yeast diaper rashes. There is an antifungal medication available such as Nystatin suspension. You can apply it directly to the affected area, with the help of cotton-tipped applicator, or administer it orally 1-2ml, four times everyday. Mothers who take antibiotics during pregnancy or babies who receive antibiotics soon after birth may be even more susceptible to thrush in their bodies, and it can be passed on to each other through breastfeeding. Although the antibiotics do their job by killing the bad bacteria, they can also destroy the good bacteria, which protect the body. Babies, however, do not commonly seem to be bothered by thrush. Babies may be treated with acidophilus diluted in breastmilk swabbed in their mouths, or you can dip a finger in the powder and let the baby suck. The intent of acidophilus treatment is to rebalance your body, so don't expect instant results. Other potential culprits for oral thrush in infants include pacifiers and formula bottle nipples that have not been properly sterilized. Women can also develop thrush on their nipples through breastfeeding and then pass on the thrush to their child. Be sure to eat plain yoghurt with live cultures regularly. Yoghurt contains probiotics which will help restore your body's natural balance of the healthy bacteria. If your baby is already eating solids make sure you feed him some yoghurt daily. Infant yeast infections are quite common. Babies tend to acquire thrush due to excess moisture in their mouths and lack of immunity. Nursing mothers need to be aware of the as this can cause the thrush transfer to the breast. Even babies have Candida yeasts in their bodies under normal circumstances. Typically, other microorganisms, such as certain types of bacteria, keep the Candida in check. Normally, neither you nor your baby will have any visible symptoms, but hormonal changes, or things that affect the immune system, or things that kill the beneficial microorganisms, like antibiotics, can allow the Candida yeast to multiply unchecked and blossom into baby thrush.
