Of course price is always a factor whether you are purchasing a compressor or any other tool but it isn't the only thing to consider. In fact a good deal isn't a good deal if what you buy can't do the job you have in mind.

There are four components you need to consider when purchasing your air compressor - power, pump, tank size, and style.

1. Power -A common mistake by first time buyers to judge the power by the PSI which stands for pounds per square inch or by HP which stands for horsepower.

When what you need to be looking at is the CFM which means cubic feet per minute. What you want to do is choose an air compressor that exceeds your CFM requirements of your air tools.2. PumpThis is another very important element to choosing the correct compressor. There are thee types of pumps - the direct drive pumps, belt drive pumps, and Invector pumps.

Direct drive pumps - use a standard induction motor which takes up minimum space and should last around 500 hours. It's oil free so no worrying about oil changes and it's a good choice for the occasional user.

Belt drive pumps - a quieter than the direct drive pumps and they are a good choice for moderate to professional users. The belt driven pump should last about three times longer than the direct drive pump. You will have to do a filter change every 500 hours.

Invector pumps - use the Coleman Powermate Invector technology. This technology has shown some impressive capabilities and an excellent life expectancy. These pumps are lightweight and use a universal motor with the an air cooling system that has a patent pending which will extend the compressors life significantly. These are a good choice if you are a first time buyer and not sure how much use you'll give it.

3. StyleThere is are terrific choices in air compressor styles. You can choose from styles that have no tank inflator to styles that heavy duty enough for contractors and industrial settings. To determine what style you want you need to know what style you need.

When you know what you need to do then you'll be able to determine what you need from your compressor. If you think it's just too simple you couldn't be more right. Nothing complicated here. Determine what your air tools need and then look at compressors that match the need.

These tips will help you quickly find the general air compressor that best suits your needs. Whether you have a couple hundred dollars to spend or a couple thousand you'll be able to find a compressor that fits your budget.
