Tips For Insuring And Buying Static Caravans

Do you fancy taking more holidays? An excellent way to be able to take more holidays is by owning a static caravan. Owning a caravan will enable you to take a holiday at much shorter notice, and much cheaper than is normally possible.

However, if you're thinking of spending your precious money on a static caravan, then you should consider a number of issues prior to signing away your cash.

Unlike touring caravans, static caravans can be subject to various geographical risks in the park where it is kept. Such unforseen events as storms, falling trees and flooding are often ignored by many people, despite how commonly they occur. On top of this there is the possibility that in winter pipes could freeze up and burst, which is a major nuisance to owners of static caravans.

When you have found a park that interests you, it is very important that you find out from the owners whether the site has ever been subject to flood or storm damage. If they tell you that it has then this could stop you getting reasonably priced static caravan insurance on the park.

Even if the site owners say it has not suffered flooding it would be advisable to also do a further check to see if the site is in an area that is prone to flooding. To do this you will require the post code of the park. If the site is situated in England or Wales, then you will need to go to the Environment Agency flooding page on their website and put in the postal code into the field on the right hand side of the screen. If the park is in Scotland then you should go to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency website.

You can also look on googlemaps to locate the site and specific caravans more exactly before referring back to the flood map for a better indicator to the risk of flooding that exists. Places that are often problematic in terms of insurance due to flooding are Norfolk and Lincolnshire, low-lying coastal areas of North Wales, and sites near major rivers such as the Avon and the Severn rivers.

You will find that nearly all holiday home/static caravan sales are of already sited caravans. The transaction will be made either by the site owner themselves, or the owner if it is a second-hand caravan (with the permission of the site owner).

Occasionally it is possible to purchase a pitch that doesn't have a van upon it and to negotiate with the owners of the site to have it sited there. In such circumstances the site owners will expect a significant payment for allowing the siting of a caravan as they would expect to make a profit on the sale of a sited caravan.

What this means is that you will pay a good deal more for a caravan that is sited than an unsited caravan. But you should note that the need to make sure your insurance policy covers you for financial loss should the caravan becomes unusable. If you don't then you risk being hit with an unpleasant double whammy: the excess costs for any repairs; and also the loss of rental income during the time the caravan is being repaired.

You should also ensure you have liability insurance if you rent out the caravan. In the unfortunate event that someone is hurt resulting from something that is deemed to be your fault, then you face the very real possibility that you could be many thousands of pounds poorer. Liability insurance will ensure that any medical and court costs incurred by you as the result of such an accident will not have to come from your pocket.

Make sure that you get yourself educated if you are thinking of buying a static caravan, and also make very sure that you have adequate insurance cover. As any sensible person knows, it is a good idea to shop around for your static caravan insurance, as this will probably save you a decent amount of cash. There are a number of very good caravan insurance companies on the market, ready to provide you with exactly what you require.
