Tips for Decorating the Living Room
|
The seating in a living room is perhaps one of the most important aspects of the living room. Conventional wisdom holds that a living room should hold a couch, a loveseat and an oversized chair. Although these are the traditional living room furnishings, it is important to remember that it is acceptable to deviate from this standard for the purpose of providing enough seating for the entire family as well as a few additional friends. A couch and loveseat are always appropriate in a living room but you may consider as many oversized chairs as necessary or any combination of couches and loveseats to provide adequate seating in this room. Ottomans are fun accessories that can also provide additional seating. Creating a comfortable room where friends and family can relax is critical to decorating a living room. A coffee table is another critical element in a living room. Depending on the size of the room and the amount of seating you may also consider including two coffee tables in your living room. Each seating location should be within reach of either the coffee table or an end table to provide a place for each person to set down a drink. If your living room is particularly spacious a second coffee table may be warranted. The style of the coffee table is not particularly important but in general the wood of the coffee table should match the wood of the couches or other forms of seating. A family that wishes to store board games or other forms of entertainment in the living room might consider a coffee table that has storage in the base of the table. Such models include those with draws or decorate bases under the table top. Finally end tables are another important element in a living room. Two end tables are usually sufficient but depending on the amount of seating available, there may be a need for additional end tables. If a chair or location on a couch is not adjacent to the coffee table there should be an end table nearby. In general, the end tables should match the coffee table but mismatched furniture will create a more eclectic feel that can be attractive. End tables are generally much taller than coffee tables and they often allow people to dine more comfortably. The accessories in a living room can be extremely varied. Whatever seems to suit the room is appropriate. Framed family photographs as well as framed prints of scenic photography are both very popular options for living room décor. Additionally, paintings that match the room well can also be considered. They should be bold and inviting but not overwhelming.
