Tips for buying the best carry on luggage
|
The key to making this carry on luggage your only luggage, or tofitting it into a larger set of luggage, is proper planning. Much of thisplanning will take place before the luggage is purchased, and itinvolves knowing what to look for in carry on luggage. One of the most critical factors when shopping for carry on luggage, ofcourse, is size. All airlines have their own rules as to just whatconstitutes a carry on bag, and if the carry on luggage you chooseexceeds the size allowance, your bag will quickly disappear to thebottom of the plane with all the other checked luggage. If you areunsure what your airline considers a carry on bag, be sure to ask. Thenormal size for carry on luggage is 22" x 14" x 9", and this sizesatisfies the needs of most airlines. The maximum weight allowed for carry on luggage is usually 40pounds, so it pays to choose carry on luggage that is lightweight yetdurable. Most airlines have tightened their restrictions on carry onbags, limiting each passenger to only one carry on bag. This makesshopping for that one bag even more of a critical decision than it was afew years ago. Since there is a good chance that you will be putting items into, andtaking items out of, that carry on luggage many times during the flightand the vacation, it is a good idea to look for a bag with lots of outsidezippered compartments. At a minimum, the carry on bag should havea large outside zippered compartment and a smaller zipperedcompartment on the outside front of the bag. Many travelers also liketheir carry on luggage to have a small zippered pocket on each side. These side pockets are the perfect size for carrying bottles of water, snacks, prescription medications and other travel essentials. It is agood idea to look for those extra carrying pockets. It is of course vital that the zippers securing all those pockets be bothdurably made and easy to open with one hand. Anyone who hastraveled knows how important it is to be able to get what you needwhile balancing purses, suitcases and travel documents. The zipper onthe main part of the carry on luggage should be large, strong andsturdy. The zippers on the smaller travel compartments will likely besmaller, but they should still be sturdy and built to last. If the zippershows any sign of sticking, or if it is difficult to operate, it is likely toget worse as time goes by. The zipper is the lifeblood of any carry onluggage, and it is absolutely vital that all the zippers operate properlyand pull smoothly.
