Tips for installing wood floors on stairs

Installing wood floors on stairs can be one of the most challenging parts of installing a quality hardwood floor, but with a little bit of planning and a little bit of knowledge it should be possible for even the beginner to install quality wood flooring on any type of stairs.

There are of course many reasons a homeowner would want to install wood flooring on the stairs, including the attractiveness of the wood flooring, and of course their strong reputation for durability. A well installed and well maintained wood floor can be a thing of beauty for many years or even decades, and installing wood floors on the stairs can be a great way to make those stairs last as long as possible.

Of course the key to installing wood floors on stairs is to choose the right type of flooring product, and to install that wood flooring in the proper way. Fitting the wood flooring to the stairs will probably require some cutting, so it is important to gather the tools you will need prior to starting the job. It may be necessary to gather some common tools such as a high quality belt or handheld sander, a jig saw and perhaps a circular saw as well, and of course a good hammer and some quality wood flooring nails.

That is because even if most of the wood flooring is installed using a quality adhesive it will probably be necessary to secure some of the wood flooring to the stairs using the right nails. There are specially designed nails and nail guns for hardwood floors, and it is important to either rent or purchase these nails and nailers prior to getting started. Nailing the edges of the wood flooring is one of the best ways to make sure those wood flooring panels will be part of the stairs for as long as you own your home.
