Chronic pain is a common problem for many people as they age. With age, one's bones and muscle structure lose elasticity and strength which makes them prone to injuries that cause chronic pain. There are several things that can reduce and alleviate chronic pain like medications, pain management techniques, and exercises. Medications Aside from medicated patches and ointments, prescription medications are great options for relieving pain. One of the most popular medications for chronic pain caused by muscle spasms is carisoprodol. The effectiveness of carisoprodol in keeping pain at bay is due to its ability to prevent pain signals from being transmitted en route to the brain. Since the brain did not receive the pain signals, it does not send messages of pain to the rest of the body. As a result, the pain is not felt. Carisoprodol also has analgesic properties that increases a person’s tolerance for pain. By increasing one’s pain threshold, a greater intensity or severity of pain is needed before it can be felt by the body. Pain Management Techniques Sometimes, the pain, while uncomfortable, does not warrant medication immediately. In these cases, applying some pain management techniques like the following will work really well: Use heating pads to relax tensed muscles. A regular heating pad applied with a gentle massage on the lower back or a hot bath can provide instant relief. Practice appropriate posture for specific activities. When standing, keep your hips, shoulder, and ears in a straight line while pulling your stomach in. If sitting, using a chair with good back support is essential to maintaining proper posture. Wear appropriate clothes and shoes for certain activities. Use specially designed pain relief footwear like orthopedic slides and devices which you can slide inside shoes for added comfort. Rest to soothe overworked muscles. The best way to do this is to lie on the floor with pillows under the knees. This works by easing the weight and pressure off one's muscles. Stretch muscles regularly. It is important to take regular stretching breaks during everyday activities like driving and sitting to ease the stress from one's muscles. Exercises Muscle elasticity and bone flexibility are greatly reduced as one ages or suffers from injuries. As such, even minor activities can trigger chronic. The best way to relieve pain is to strengthen the muscles by means of exercise. Below are some exercises designed to provide chronic pain relief: Stretching. Regular stretching can ease the tension in knotted muscles and reduce stress. Aquatic Therapy. Doing exercises in water increases a person’s range of movement without additional stress and trauma to the muscles. Yoga. With a variety of yoga poses, a patient can practice those that is within his physical capability. Yoga poses are also designed to increase muscle strength and flexibility.
