Tonsillolith - Smelly Lumps Appear In Your Mouth? (Tonsil Stone)

If you get smelly lumps appearing in your mouth it could be a tonsillolith. They are commonly called a tonsil stone and form within the tonsils at the back of your throat. Eventually they dislodge and are either swallowed or work their way into the mouth. Another disturbing fact is that they are so often linked to bad breath problems. If squashed between your fingers tonsilloliths gives off an awful stench a bit like rotten eggs or vomit. So, why do they form and what can we do about them?

They form in deep crypts within your tonsils and consist of an accumulation of mucous, sulfur-producing bacteria, food particles, dead skin cells and white blood cells. The same sulfur-producing bacteria is often found at the back of the tongue which is why many who endure tonsilloliths also have bad breath problems. A tonsil stone can differ in mass from being very tiny right up to the size of a pea and even bigger than this in extreme cases.

It is only since the arrival of computers and the internet that sufferers have been able to research and find out for their selves about what a tonsillolith actually is. Over the years many sufferers have carried on through life without ever knowing what their condition was because they were to embarrassed to ask and even if they did ask many doctors and dentists did not know. Things are getting better though with the medical profession and public gradually becoming more aware and educated about this disorder.

What can you do about them? Well one option that some use is to squeeze them out of the tonsils by gently using a moistened cotton bud or other similar implement. Remember though, that pushing anything down your throat can make you gag and can be potentially dangerous and unhygienic. Prodding at your tonsils could also make them sore and uncomfortable.

Other methods of self help include regularly gargling with salt water, or using a water pik that squirts water into the crypts to wash them out. Be careful not to set the water pressure to high as this may damage soft tissue within the tonsils.

These methods may be effective in the short-term but may not do anything for bad breath problems and will not cure your condition long-term. If you are looking for more of a permanent lasting solution then you need to use an effective proven all-in-one treatment plan that eliminates tonsilloliths, bad breath and any unpleasant metallic tastes in the mouth for good. Tonsil stone treatment is available and can work amazingly well if used correctly as part of your daily oral hygiene routine.

Lets face it; most of us will put off doing something positive about tonsilloliths for another day. The only problem is, this day never comes and we carry on through life just putting up with rather than doing something constructive about our predicament. If you suffer with tonsils stones then be positive and act now. There is a tonsil stones treatment available and it's worth giving it a go. I know, because I took that step and never looked back.
