As hobbies go, stamp collecting can be one of the most inexpensive collections to start. In fact, you might even be able to get your collection off to a good start by a quick visit to your local post office. Above and beyond the stamps you include in your collection; however, there are a few basic tools that can make the hobby of stamp collecting not only more enjoyable, but possibly more lucrative as well. Stamp albums are an important tool to have in any size collection because they allow you to not only keep your collection organized but they protect your stamps from a variety of dangers as well. When choosing stamp albums remember that you need to look for products that contain acid-free paper. Stamp hinges and mounts are also important tools to have on hand in order to hold your stamps on the album page so that the original gum on the stamp is not destroyed or damaged in any way. This is particularly important if you intend for your collection to build value. Also important to insure that your stamps are not accidentally torn or damaged is a pair of stamp tongs. This tool resembles a pair of tweezers; however, it does not contain sharp edges. Even if you are beginning a stamp collection simply for the purposes of your own enjoyment, it’s a good idea to have a good quality stamp catalog. This can give you an idea of the value of your stamps and will help you to identify specific information about your stamps. This tool can further help to ensure that collectors do not pay too much for a stamp as well as ensure the fact that they do not receive a forgery. In many cases, items that can affect the value of your stamp may be almost miniscule and difficult to see with the naked eye. A magnifying glass will allow you to examine the details of your stamps up close and help you to identify any factors that could increase or decrease the value of your stamp. While they are not absolutely necessary, many stamp collectors also use a variety of other tools to make it easier to organize and handle their collections. One of the most interesting introductions to the field of stamp collecting is software that makes collecting easier than ever before. There are numerous different types of software on the market and many of them are ideal for beginning collectors as well as philatelists, hobbyists and dealers. Individuals who are new to the hobby of stamp collecting will find that the design of most such software programs makes it easy to set up and use with tutorials that help them along the way. Specific information about stamps can be organized and maintained in minute or broad overview detail. Some software programs also include helpful tools such as a glossary and web resources that make it easy to find and organize information about online stamp dealers and auctions. Stamp collecting contacts can also be easily organized. Individuals who are interested in acting as dealers, or who simply want to be very organized with their collection, will find a ready to use inventory management system that allows them to easily and quickly sort their stamp collection. Information can be sorted in a variety of ways such as tables, standard record view or browser view. Several software programs include the ability to generate reports and labels as well as HTML so that users can create summaries, web pages and catalogs. The price for this type of software averages about $65.
