Top Tips for Marketing your Business on MySpace

With a user base in the hundreds of millions, MySpace offers a great opportunity to market your website.

However, because of the demographics of its users (mostly teenagers) and its social nature, it is not suitable for all businesses. For example, if you are selling life insurance you are probably not likely to meet with much success on MySpace.

Although there have been some amazing success stories, there is no tried and tested formula for successful marketing on MySpace. However, some of the world’s biggest companies are doing it so there is no reason why you shouldn’t too.

MySpace offers a lot of flexibility as regards the appearance of your profile. Try to build your page to reflect the look and feel of your website. Try to make it as fresh as possible and make full use of audio, video and images to capture the interest of fellow MySpace users. If you stumble across something that people like, you can watch your page's popularity increase dramatically in a short period of time.

Let your profile work for itself. Do not link to random people as friends. With imagination and luck, they will come to you. Many MySpace marketers, however, do use MySpace bots which will automatically send out invitations to multiple MySpace users based on some chosen keywords. However, this practice is frowned upon and could get you banned.

Any experiment with using a social networking website for marketing, including MySpace, is going to be hit or miss. So, it's important you stay committed and focused on your marketing goals.

Some companies have met with good success by creating widgets that other users can place on their pages. For example, a news ticker widget with news that relates to a specialized area. If you can make something that looks good and is popular, the viral effect could have it appearing on thousands of MySpace pages within weeks.

If you are successful and you do manage to make friends on MySpace who are genuinely interested in your products, make sure you keep them. Keep your MySpace blog page regularly updated; send bulletins to your friends letting them know about any new products and providing them with your latest news. However, don’t over do it. Spam is in the eye of the beholder, even if it is good content.

Perhaps most importantly, reply to any messages your friends send you. If they take the time to write to you then they deserve a response. As a business, how and when you respond to messages says volumes about your products and services.

There are no guarantees when it comes to using MySpace to market your products. However, it will cost you little to experiment and the traffic possibilities are endless.
