Top Tips to Using del.icio.us as a Marketing Tool

As with many of Web 2.0's popular social networking websites, del.icio.us offers new and exciting opportunities to market your website and your product at little or no cost.

De.licio.us, which is soon to be known simply as Delicious, is a social bookmarking website that allows people to store and share bookmarks online. You can organize your bookmarks by tagging them and access them from any computer with an internet connection.

De.licio.us is one of the many rags to riches success stories of the Web 2.0 revolution. It was founded by Joshua Schachter in 2003 before it was acquired by Yahoo! in 2005 for an undisclosed amount—most guesses put it somewhere between $15M and $30M.

Like many social networking and bookmarking websites, you can gain popularity and drive traffic to your site by providing content that people like. Before you jump into the bookmarking game, spend some time researching del.icio.us to find out what people like, what topics are popular, and how big, or small, your target audience is.

Perusing the users' tag clouds will give you a good idea on popular topics. The bigger the link in the cloud, the more popular that topic is. Once you have an idea of what topics are most popular, you can begin to tailor your content in this direction. However, don't try to force your marketing into places it may not fit.

The easiest way to get your content bookmarked on del.icio.us is to embed "add to del.icio.us" buttons on your articles and web pages that may be of community interest. You can also do this within your RSS feeds as well.

Your chief aim when marketing through del.icio.us is to have your content listed on the 'hotlist' or 'popular' pages on the website. If you can achieve this, without spamming the bookmarks, you have the potential to get a lot of traffic in a short amount of time.

There are no hard and fast rules to producing del.icio.us friendly content. However, you will need to appeal to a large enough audience to get people to click through. What you don't want to do is deliberately advertise your business. You must go beyond thinking about sales and actually offer something, information and content, that a visitor can use. Informative or how-to articles, podcasts and videos tend to rank well, as does content with a high entertainment value. But, again, don't entertain for entertainment's sake. You want visitors who visit your site because they value your message, not because they value your funny video.

What about backlinks? I don't recommend posting merely for backlinks. Why? Because you need to be different. If your information is good, solid, and informative, you'll get backlinks. Back linking for the sake of backlinks borders on spam. It's so much easier to build backlinks when your content is taken care of first.

Also, you shouldn't limit yourself to del.icio.us buttons only. Add buttons for all of the major social bookmarking and networking websites, such as Digg, Reddit, Furl, Ma.gnolia and StumbleUpon. Your goal should be to drive traffic from as many varied sources as possible.
