Trailer Axels: How To Repair Your Boat Trailer

Boat owners may sometimes be required to perform maintenance on their boat trailer, maintenance that require replacing parts such as tires, axels and brakes.

The tires

There are certain things to consider when you want new tires for your boat trailer:

- stay away from light truck tires or passenger car tires; these are bias belted and their flexible walls can make the trailer sway out of control.

- the best choice is to buy tires with double steel belts and nylon plies.

- check the thread design to see if the tires can be used during dry and wet weather conditions, as well.

You will also need to make some other check-ups. The inflation pressure in the tires must be kept to the maximum. Another issue is the lug torque, as when the torque does not perform right, the wheel may even fall off. Ask at the manufacturer's store for the best torque, and use their recommendations.

The axels

When you need to replace the axels, a few things must be done correctly. For instance, the distance between the two hubs on the tires must be measured, so you can know the length of the axel. Always use the center of the springs when you measure the distance between them. An axel is a very important part of your vehicle, as it needs to be able to support your vehicle weight plus something on top. Measure the distance between the spindles in order to see the right length of your axel. When you go shopping for axels, make sure that the style you choose will be the right one.

The brakes

There are two types of braking systems: hydraulic and electric. The hydraulic braking system works automatically, and here is the principle on which it works: an inertial differential pressure appears between the tow and the trailer, when you apply the brakes, which makes for a mechanical pressure on the master cylinder rod in a hydraulic surge brake coupler. With electronic brakes, things are different: when the brakes are used, an electronic signal will be sent in order to determine the tow to slow down; the hydraulic pressure appears and then it is transmitted through the brake system, making the vehicle to stop. Many recommend the second system as being far more adaptable for different types of trailers.

Your trailer will be full with different things, so you need to take this aspect into consideration when deciding for a braking system. A trailer with multiple axels will need a special type of brakes. Remember to apply regular maintenance and always follow the manual instructions when working on the components.

Having a boat is a beautiful dream. If you manage to transform it into reality, then you will need to have a reliable trailer to get your boat around in safe conditions.
