Traveling in Italy



Italy is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful countries in the world and one of the most popular tourist destinations. With an extensive history, expansive scenic views, lovely Mediterranean seaports, breathtaking Alps resorts and the opportunity to indulge in gourmet cuisine and wine as well as fashionable clothing shops, it is little wonder than so many tourists flock to Italy each year.

From outside Europe, air travel is the most popular way to arrive in this fascinating country; however, be aware that if you plan to travel throughout the countryside during your stay it's a good idea to consider other methods of travel for inter-country travel, as air travel can be quite expensive. Other options include train and bus as well as renting a car. Travel by rail within Italy is favored by many due to the fact that it is reliable and fairly inexpensive.

If you're planning your first trip to Italy, or plan to return after a long stint since your last visit, it's a good idea to educate yourself on a few basic facts concerning this fascinating country as well as some travel tips that can make your trip more pleasurable.

Although Italian is, of course, the official language of Italy; when traveling throughout this gorgeous country you will find that you have no problem conversing with the natives as many other languages are commonly spoken as well, such as French and German.

The best times to visit Italy are during the spring and fall; from April to May and October to November. Traveling during these seasons gives you the opportunity to take advantage of the beautiful seasons during moderate temperatures and without the need to fight large crowds of tourists.

When planning a trip to Italy, it's important to keep in mind the time of year you are planning to travel as well as the vicinity of Italy that you plan to visit, because these two factors can greatly impact the type of climate you will encounter and the clothing you should pack. Beginning in early September, it is quite common for snow to begin falling in the Alps while the regions south of Rome tend to experience a hotter and drier climate, especially during the summer when the African wind begins to arrive. Regardless of where you travel in Italy, it's a good idea to bring along a rain jacket.

While Italy is a relatively safe country to travel in, like any other area frequented by tourists, the regions of Italy do experience problems related to pick-pocketing and theft so you should keep this in mind when traveling about. Never carry all of your money on you, use traveler's checks whenever possible and avoid carrying a handbag or wallet. Instead opt for a money belt that can be worn under your clothing.

Unless you are already familiar with the euro system of currency, you should take the time to acquaint yourself with it before traveling to Italy. Paper euro currency is available in denominations of five, ten, twenty, fifty, one hundred, two hundred and five hundred. Coin currency is also available, with one euro divided into one hundred cents; known as centimes. Coinage is available in denominations of 1, 2 and 5 centimes as well as 10, 20 and 50 centimes.

When it becomes necessary to change your money in Italy, this can be accomplished at any one of the banks or post offices throughout the country. ATMS are located throughout Italy and credit cards are also widely accepted. One can comfortably travel in Italy for around 150 euros per day; with a mid-range hotel running approximately 60 and a mid-range meal at about 15.
