Triplet Ultrasound - How Early?
|
There are a couple of early clues for determining if you are going to give birth to multiple babies. One is the ultrasound and the other is the testing hCG levels. If you are carrying more than one baby the levels will often be elevated. If you are carrying one fetus the test will run about 70 mIU while multiple fetuses will run about 200 mIU. And the great news is this test can be ran as early as 18 days. Although it's not 100% accurate it is very accurate. The second popular option is using the ultrasound. And in fact the ultrasound is now available in 2D, 3D, and 4D. 4D is a live moving image and it's fabulous with the older fetuses. It is fascinating technology and if you have the opportunity do have a 4D scan done. In our modern world the ultrasound is an essential part of every woman's care during her pregnancy. Within the first trimester the ultrasound will be able to determine if there is more than one fetus in the womb. With twins it is almost 100% accurate but the accuracy does decline when the number of fetuses rises. If you are pregnant as a result of in vitro fertilization there is a good change that you will be carrying multiple fetuses and your doctor will usually order an ultrasound as early as four weeks. Telling whether your babies will be identical often won't be determined until after their birth. However if your babies share a placenta they are identical twins and sometimes this is seen in the ultrasound. During your ultrasound the technician will apply a conductive gel. A portable transducer probe will then slowly be applied across the abdomen. The sound waves will take pictures of the womb and the fetuses. Two or more heartbeats can be easily picked up long before the bodies are visible but often the head are also visible. This is a very exciting time when suddenly you see all your babies. If the uterus is larger than normal after 16 weeks then there is a good chance that you are carrying multiple fetuses and an ultrasound will be repeated. In 2000 there were just over 100,000 twin births in the United States. Today because of the growing number of people turning to fertility drugs that number has grown astronomically and multiple births continue to rise. A baby a pretty exciting adventure to look forward. Two is a thrill and multiples such as triplets are a god send but it sure is nice to have some notice so you can prepare for their arrival and the triplet ultrasound is a great tool to do just that.
