Twelve Easy Steps to Making Purses at Home
|
1. Gather your material.Material - May I suggest about a yard of any material you want to use. I like to get old denim and patchwork it together until I have a kaleidoscope of cloth that measure about the size I need.Hot Glue Gun -Then I get myself a hot glue gun with the appropriate glue sticks that match. The dollar store down the road always has these materials if you find you do not have a hot glue gun. A great investment and almost no money! I also like to use an old metal lid from my mayonnaise jar as something to place under my hot glue gun. Those glue sticks get all stringy when the get hot and tend to get all over everything if I do not use the lid.Sewing Machine and Needle - Sewing machines speed this up a great deal. However, you can do this by hand with patience. You will need a needle anyway for the neat doodads you will add later.Doodads and Thingies - At this point I grab out my button canister. I grad all kinds of crafting odds and ends. Can never have to many thingies and doodads.A Handle - I like using hemp twine braids upon braids as a handle for my purses. You can use just about anything you wish. You can use cord, heavy-duty denim sewn into a handle. Anything that is firm can be made into a handle.Cardboard - Any old piece of cardboard that is firm and solid will work for this purpose.Lining - You must have a lining. A lining protects your purse/handbag and your belongings from one another. I like using some spare material I have that is bright and pretty. You can use anything!Scissors - Don't forget the cutting utensil that is most important here: the scissors.2. Plan, Design, and PatternizeAt this point you are probably looking at this material and supplies wondering what the heck you are gonna do. At this point, I do not blame you. One of the fastest and best ways to solve this problem is to plan what you want your purse to look like. You may then put all of your materials in order. Lay them out in a way that meets your needs.3. The first thing I do is cut a bottom. Since I am imagining a square type purse, I will cut out a square bottom that is about 8 inches wide by 4 inches long. Then I cut out another piece that is exactly the same length. Yep, now I have 2 rectangles that are 8" x 4".4. I cut out a piece of cardboard that is cut to be 7" x 3". This cardboard should be a bit more heavy duty than a cereal box, but a double up cereal box would work as well.5. Heat up the hot glue gun. Wrap one piece of the material completely around the cardboard. Glue that same material's edge to the underside of the cardboard. Once that is dried, glue that covered cardboard face down centered on the other piece of material. The cardboard should not be visible at this point. You will have a circular.6. Cut some material the length you desire for your purse. Sew the material so that you are left with a loop of fabric that is the length you desire.7. Sew the lining material where it is appropriate at this point. I like to triple sew all the sides and ends for added strength.8. Now that you have the material looped to fit the cardboard piece, sew the end of one of the looped ends to the material hanging off of the cardboard piece. You should see the outlines of a purse at this point.9. Now triple stitch the end of the loop not attached to the cardboard.10. Glue you handles into place. Then get the needle and thread and sew the handles into place being precise and exact in the placement. I actually sew squares where the material meets the bag. If you like, add a few beads in between each stitch. This looks awesome!11. At this point I like adding my embellishments.12. Enjoy your new purse! Making purses at home is easy, fun, and worth the effort. These make great play dates and gifts for that little girl in our lives and that reside in all of us. Of course, this is not a precise pattern, but it does give a rough example of what you need. There are no set rules. Sewing two pieces of square fabrics together would be considered a purse. Enjoying the day and creating something special is a great way for mothers and daughters to bond as well. Just have fun, relax, and realize that there is no right or wrong.
