Twin Pregnancy Ultrasound - How Early?
|
An ultrasound is the most common method of determining multiple pregnancies but there is another common blood test that is used. Which is the testing of hCG levels. At 18 days after ovulation this test can be done and if you are carrying twins these levels are often elevated. In a singe gestation it runs about 70 mIU while in a twin gestation it runs about 200 mIU. This test is by no means full proof but certainly a good indicator. Modern technology has presented us with some other options for determining if you are pregnant with twins. The ultrasound is the most popular and safe method of finding out whether you are carrying twins. In fact these days the ultrasound is a routine part of any woman's pregnancy care for the entire 9 months. Within the first trimester the ultrasound can actually detect twins so there's no surprises. You'll have plenty of warning. When it comes to determining if you are carrying twins the ultrasound is almost totally accurate. As the number of fetuses grows the accuracy does go down somewhat. If you are pregnant as a result of in vitro fertilization an ultrasound will be done at around 4 weeks because there is a good change that you will be carrying multiple fetuses. When you arrive for your appointment you will need to remove your shirt or open it to expose your belly. A conductive gel will be applied over your abdomen and then the technician will use a portable transducer probe that will be slowly run across your belly. The ultrasound uses sound waves which will take the images and send them to the computer where they are first saved and then shown on the screen. In the early stages if you don't know what you are looking for you may need the help of the technician to actually see your babies. Two heartbeats can be easily picked up long before you can see the bodies. Two heads is usually the next most common clue that's picked up with the ultrasound. If the uterus is larger than normal after 16 weeks then there is a good chance that you are carrying twins and an ultrasound should be done again. Telling whether your twins will be identical is another dilemma that's not so easily resolved. In fact chances are you won't know until the actual births of your babies. If your babies share a placenta they are definitely identical twins and this can sometimes be seen on the ultrasound. Two sacs can mean identical or non identical twins so you'll have to wait for their birth. Twins are very exciting and what a great life adventure you have to look forward. A twin pregnancy ultrasound is a great way to find out early and have plenty of time to plan for you are doubly blessed!
