Types of Ants - Four Types to Know About

Today you'll find that there are many types of ants that live all around the world today. You'll find them in the rainforests, in your own backyard, in the deserts, and more. Usually you'll find that ants live in their own colony and every colony can have more than a million ants in it. Many people don't actually realize that there are a variety of different types of ants out there today, from army antis to leafcutter ants. Also, you'll find that every colony has solider ants, worker ants, and the queen ant as well. So, let's take a look at some of the varieties of ants that you may be interested in.

Army AntsWhen it comes to different types of ants, one type you may have heard of are the army ants. These ants are actually quite highly evolved today. You'll find these antis in South America and another type of ants that are quite like them are the driver ants from Africa. These antis never have a nest that is permanent and they move around quite a bit. You'll also find that they can reproduce in two different ways - nuptial flights and fission.

Honeypot AntsAnother ant type to consider from all the different types of ants is the Honeypot ants. Usually you'll find that these ants live in places that are very hot and dry, such as North America, Africa, Australia, and even in some deserts. You can tell them apart because they have abdomens that are enlarged and many places they are considered to actually be a delicacy.

Weaver AntsWeaver ants are a type of ants that actually make their own nests up in trees and they do this by taking leaves and attaching them. They actually take a bridge of worker ants and pull a variety of leaves together. Then they will actually sew these tree leaves together. This is done by pressing on the leaves the silk producing larvae that they have.

Leafcutter AntsLast of all, when it comes to types of ants, you've probably never heard of the leafcutter ants. These ants live only in their colonies, and they only thing that they eat is fungus. You'll find that they actually have castes and they perform a variety of different functions in their colony according to their caste.

As you can see, there definitely are quite a few different types of ants. These aren't the only ones either. There are also Australian bulldog ants and fire ants as well that you may run into. While ants are very small most of the time, they can be threatening to animals and humans, so it is important to know as much about them as possible.
