Types of Bicycle

The evolution of bicycles has been happening for close to two centuries. With Baron Von Davis 1817 invention of the "walking machine", this was basically the first framework of a bicycle without the paddles. The first ever machine to be officially called a bicycle was the High Wheel bicycles. Bicycles have come a long way since Baron Von Davis "walking machine" if you were to go to any local bicycle stores. People can now purchase a bike according to their specific needs, such as mountain bikes for those who wants durability in their bikes.

Road bicycles, or commonly known as racing bicycles due to their characteristics of having a rather light frame and narrow, high-pressure tires which are ideal for racing. Another characteristic that makes racing bikes ideal for racing would be the aerodynamic efficient positions that the road bicycles allow the rider to be in. With a raised seat and drop handlebars, it puts the riders in the most aerodynamic posture possible. The design of these road bikes allows the riders to be faster and more responsive. The con of the road bicycles would be the amount of discomfort and hard to handle for riders that normally use wider tires and prefer a more upright position.

Mountain bikes have recently gained popularity because of their durability. Not only can it be used off-road, it is not used by day-to-day riders on the streets. The mountain bikes can ride over potholes, curbs, and buckled pavements without the fear of having it breakdown. One of the noticeably big differences between mountain bikes compared to other bikes is that they have big fat tires. The tires allow for better traction for off-road riding. Recent mountain bikes are being equipped with suspension to help absorb the rough riding even more. The first con about mountain bikes is that it is not as ideal to use it to travel far on flat surfaces. The second con is that it is a lot heavier because of the sturdy frame that gives the mountain bikes the durability it is well known for.

The Hybrid bicycle is basically just a combination between a mountain bike and a road bike. It tries to take the rugged, durability of a mountain bike and take away all its cons to make it better for urban usage. The tires that are used by hybrid bikes are neither as fat nor as thin as road bikes. It is right in between allowing the rider this bike on either unpaved surfaces or paved ones. Another nice feature of Hybrid bikes is that they all have rather high number of gears, allowing the riders to be comfortable in all types of terrains. Also it is undecided as of yet what a hybrid should be and there is usually a bias depending on the manufacturers on rather it should have more mountain bikes features or road bikes. The obvious con would be you only get half of each world, and if you prefer to do more off-road biking then a mountain bike is better and vice versa for road bikes.

Touring bikes are designed to have plenty of places to equip luggage racks. That is because they are used to carry specialized luggage and other components used for long-distance riding. The touring bikes are basically a combination of mountain and road bikes components. The difference between the touring bikes and hybrids bikes is that they have a heavy-duty framed designed specially for the weight being demanded by the loads of luggage. With the feature of being able to carry luggage and is durable enough for long distance riding, it extremely popular with the carries and commuters. The con that comes with the touring bikes is that the ride is rather much slower and less agile in terms of handling.

There are two types of bicycles that are not as common as many of the other types such as mountain bikes and road bikes. The first one would be recumbent bikes. Recumbent bikes are specially designed for riders who may have back, hand, or neck problems regularly and which are especially emphasized in a cycling position. The seats provided by a recumbent bike allow riders to sit back like a regular chair reducing the amount of stress on the lower back area. The second type of bikes would be Tandem bikes. These bikes are built for two riders at a time, with the front controlling most of the functions such as braking, shifting, and steering. The only function the back rider will have to be in charge of is braking which is also very limited. These bikes are not as commonly seemed on the road, as they are used normally as leisure rides.
