Types of Fireplaces
|
A wood burning fireplace is one of the most traditional forms of fireplaces available. One distinct advantage to a wood burning fireplace is that it can easily be converted to a gas log burning fireplace if you decide that you would prefer to have a gas fireplace. A wood burning fireplace also can be vented to the outside to create an odor free fireplace environment. Wood burning fireplaces have a variety of decorating options and can often be faced with marble, tile, stone or brick to suit your tastes. The most significant disadvantage to a wood burning fireplace is the maintenance required. A wood burning fireplace involves a great deal of maintenance and regular cleanings to keep the fireplace operating correctly. Failure to perform the maintenance can result in problems that can cause damage to the home. Gas fireplaces can be further divided into vent free gas fireplaces and direct vent gas fireplaces. Vent free gas fireplaces are extremely popular because they do not require a chimney. This versatility provides many installation options. Direct vent gas fireplaces are popular with individuals who are sensitive to the odors of a gas fireplace but these fireplaces do not provide a great flexibility in design options. They need to vent either horizontal through an outside wall or vertically through the roof so the location of the fireplace is limited by these constraints. Both forms of gas fireplaces provide an excellent source of heat and are both capable of operating during power outages. A direct vent gas fireplace, however, provides a more realistic flame than a vent free gas fireplace. Direct vent gas fireplaces also are odor free while vent free gas fireplaces have a lingering odor that could have an effect on those who are sensitive to the smells of gas. Electric fireplaces are also available. This type of fireplace has several distinct advantages including ease of installation, the ability to place the fireplace wherever you choose and a large amount of options in terms of decorative faces. One of the disadvantages of the electric fireplace is that although the flame is often realistic, it may not be as realistic as you would like. The other disadvantage is that this type of fireplace cannot be used during power outages. There are many types of options available if you are planning to add a fireplace to your home. Wood burning, gas and electric are three popular options for fireplaces. Each of these options has its own advantages and disadvantages and each person will need to decide for themselves which type of fireplace is right for their home. While electric fireplaces provide the most decorating options, they are not the most realistic and they are not able to function during a power outage so they cannot be used as an alternate source of heat. Wood burning fireplaces are charming and can be used at any time but they require a great deal of maintenance. Gas may be an excellent option if you are looking for a fireplace with minimal maintenance but many decorating options. About The Author: Jason Petrina is the Editor and Publisher of Article Click.
