Types of Leadership - A Brief Overview



Today you'll find that if you want to be successful, a good leadership style is going to be important. There are actually various instances where we use leadership in our lives, and at some point in time, we'll end up taking some leadership roles in life today. It's easy to take a look at leadership in the business arena, in politics, religion, and sports. However, there are a variety of different types of leadership and you'll find that the more you understand about the various types of leadership, the better leader you will be able to be.

Autocratic LeadershipOne of the main types of leadership is an Autocratic leadership, which is basically a dictatorship where one person is making all of the decisions. This type of leadership often leads to discontent and is not usually used; however, in some cases it can be used in order to complete unskilled or routine tasks. At allows quick decisions to be made, the approach is in no way creative, and it works well when there is not a need to have input and the entire responsibilities are laid on the leader.

Democratic LeadershipAnother of the most common types of leadership you'll come across is Democratic leadership. This is definitely the type of leadership that is most effective and it is a style of leadership that includes the participation of others. It allows others to feel as if they have some control of what is going on, making them feel appreciated and satisfied. However, the leader still has the final say. The leader looks for suggestions and ideas, but acts like a guide, and although the leader still will have the final say, the rest of the team is involved in the process. This is a type of leadership that is very beneficial to all and can help to improve people skills as well.

Delegative LeadershipLast of all, another one of the common types of leadership is Delegative leadership. This type of leadership is based along the idea that everything cannot be done by a single leader. Leaders have to work to delegate decisions and tasks, although the final responsibility is going to be theirs. This is a style of leadership that is best used when other members about the team know a whole lot about the subject and it works well with highly trained and motivated people. Team members have the ability to make decisions, and it can be a very effective leadership style.
