Types of Steel Hurricane Shutters

Steel hurricane shutters are very good at repelling the strength of hurricane winds. There are many different styles of steel hurricane shutters, ranging from steel plates that need to be fastened on during a hurricane watch time period to flexible roll up style that can be rolled into place at almost the last moment, either by hand cranks or a motorized version. There are even styles that appear as normal shutters and can be painted to match the paint of your house, but can be fastened securely enough to withstand the strength of hurricane winds. Which one you get to install at your house should depend on the size of your budget and who will be securing them in place before the storm.

The basic simple steel plate over the window is perhaps the least expensive type of steel hurricane shutters, but the style that needs the strongest person to install. Sheets of steel large enough to cover your windows will be heavy, weighing anywhere from around fifty pounds for smaller windows to as much as one hundred and fifty pounds for larger windows. If you need a larger piece of steel to cover one of your windows, I would recommend that your use another style of steel hurricane shutters as pieces of steel over 150 of weight are very difficult for even the strongest person to put into place alone. If your steel hurricane shutters can not be put into place then they will not be very effective in protecting your home.

Using steel hurricane shutters that appear like normal shutters usually require extra fastening during the storm. This may consist of a bar that locks into place over the steel hurricane shutters to secure them against the wind or may be as simple as extra bolts instead. This style of steel hurricane shutter is the simplest for a single person to manually secure against the storm and may be the best purchase for your home.

Steel hurricane shutters that are flexible and roll into place whether by hand crank or by motorized crank are the most expensive style but are also the easiest to secure against a hurricanes fury. If you can afford this style for your home that you plan on retiring in, I highly recommend it as they will easily double for securing against theft as well when you travel. Installing steel hurricane shutters will be well worth the expense it costs you after the next hurricane runs through your town.
