Ultralight Sleeping Bags What Serious Backpackers Choose
|
For casual family camping trips or such things as letting the kids have a summer sleepover in the backyard, regular heavier sleeping bags are just fine. When you are doing most of your traveling by car or boat and you arent anticipating any harsh weather, there is no reason to buy or use ultralight sleeping bags. The main reason that you would want to steer away from buying ultralight bags for casual camping or backyard sleeping is that the ultralight sleeping bags are significantly more expensive. They are more expensive, however, for good reason. Ultralight sleeping bags generally weigh anywhere from one to almost four pounds, depending on the type of ultralight bag and what it is being used for. The filling can range from the popular goose-down to a synthetic filling such as Dacron. Although many people think that the goose-down bag would always be the best choice, this isnt necessarily true. Though it is true that the goose-down filling provides maximum warmth and the lightest weight, goose down does not do well when it gets wet. If you will be sleeping in very cold weather but are assured of staying dry, then goose down would be alright. If, however, there is a possibility of the sleeping bag getting wet and in severe weather conditions its hard to predict what can happen then a synthetic fill in your ultralight bags is almost always the better choice. Though regular heavier sleeping bags can take quite a bit of punishment and still last a while, ultralight sleeping bags tend to be a bit more fragile. This doesnt mean that they cant withstand a heavy duty camping trip, however. What it means is that you should take a little extra care with your bag; making sure that things are not thrown on it or that the covering is not unduly stressed. For a bag that can be compressed down to an extremely small size but provides unbelievable warmth in even the coldest of conditions, taking a little extra care is definitely worth it.
