Ultrasound Appendicitis

Appendicitis is a very serious condition that needs to be diagnosed quickly or it can turn into a life threatening problem. An ultrasound appendicitis is an excellent way to determine what's going on.

Acute appendicitis has not been diagnosed previously and it accounts for about 2% of hospital admissions and yet only 50% of patients in the preoperative stage are correctly diagnosed.

Right iliac fossa pain can be caused by appendicitis, non specific abdominal pain, urinary tract infection, pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, renal colic, and constipation.

Right iliac fossa mass can be a result of Crohn's disease, Mucocele, gallbladder, Psoas abscess, appendix mass, pelvic kidney, ovarian cysts, or caecal carcinoma.

You might feel better knowing that only 10% of the population will ever develop acute appendicitis and the number of incidences continues to fall. Women are less likely to have acute appendicitis.

When you visit the emergency room your physician will watch for central abdominal pain on the right that is moving, anorexia, vomiting, nausea, and low grade pyrexia. The localized tenderness and percussion tenderness will be monitored.

There are several investigations that will be done to determine whether you are dealing with appendicitis.

1. Urinalysis to exclude urinary tract infection2. Pregnancy test to exclude ectopic pregnancy3. Abdominal x-ray4. White blood cell test5. Ultrasound to help assess any masses or abscesses6. The scoring system

Appendicitis can be difficult to diagnose. If there is doubt you will be placed under observation and it may even be decide to do an appendectomy. IV fluids and analgesia's will be fed to you. It's important to not that opiate analgesia will not hide the symptoms of peritoneum. Antibiotics may be started early.

It is best to perform the appendicectomy before the appendix ruptures which can become a life threatening situation. Today's appendicitis operation is much simpler than that of only a few years ago.

In 80% of patients that have acute appendicitis the diagnosis is made of classis symptoms and perhaps with the assistance of an ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis. CT can also be used although an ultrasound costs much less. An ultrasound appendicitis is an excellent use of medical equipment and it could save your life.
