Understanding A HEPA Vacuum

Today there is so much hype about what a vacuum can and cannot do combined with all the hype about being a HEPA vacuum you can very quickly become confused. Well it's time you understood.

In order for a filter to be able to wear the title of HEPA filter it must trap a minimum of 99.7% of the contaminants that pass through it with a size of 0.3 microns.

HEPA technology isn't new. In fact it dates back to 1940 when it was developed by the USA Atomic Energy Commission who were in charge of developing a top secret filtering system that would be effective for radioactive particulate contaminants.

Earlier HEPA filters were very large and cumbersome but they did their job to trap dangerous particles. They were commonly used in isolation rooms, operating rooms, and by pharmaceutical manufacturers.

Today HEPA filters are about as common as a grilled cheese sandwich with HEPA filters found in air cleaners, air filters, and vacuums. Of coursed they are still used in commercial venues.

In fact you might be surprised to find out that HEPA filters must pass stringent testing and then if they pass they are assigned a serial number which is printed on the filter.

Not all filters are able to pass the 0.3 microns and these get marketed as HEPA type filters capturing only 90% of the particles that pass through or a 1 micron. Don't get confused. There is a big difference and it is important that you can tell what it is. The easiest way is to look for the serial number. No number then it's not a true HEPA filter - it's that simple.

Wondering why you need a HEPA vacuum? Well if you have allergy sufferers in your home or other ailments it can reduce the number of particles in the air. This is especially true with a real HEPA filter.

More than 50% of the vacuums on the market have a HEPA filter. Statistics have shown that people suffering from allergies, asthma, and other respiratory ailments show a remarkable improvement when a HEPA vacuum is combined with an in house HEPA filtration system.

That should give you your answer. It can never hurt and it can only help. Since there is generally no extra cost for the inclusion of a HEPA system it only makes sense to buy a HEPA vacuum.
