Understanding Fusion Cuisine Before You Try It

Everything has boundaries. Perimeters exist even in the culinary industry. There are limits that are observed by customers, kitchen staff and the Head Chef. There are also implied boundaries between various world cuisines. Generally, people respect these boundaries. They also avoid encroaching on other people's cooking techniques. Nowadays, however, there are an increasing number of chefs who are venturing into blending various cuisines and culinary cultures. This cooking technique is popularly referred to as fusion cuisine. In fact, many chefs are succeeding in their attempts to merge various cuisines.

The History of Fusion Cuisine

Fusion Cuisine is actually not new. It has been around for a couple of decades. Chefs started to merge cuisines around the '70s. Culinary legends like Wolfgang Puck among others introduced this concept. He actually laid down the foundation for this technique. He is the brains behind the common culinary fusions and pairings. An example of which is the fusion of European cuisine with Asian cuisine, commonly referred to as Eurasian cuisine. This was easy for Chef Puck because of his knowledge of both cuisines. He was originally trained in Europe, but he is thoroughly familiar with the Asian dishes. Eurasian basically combines two cooking techniques and dishes, so you can end up with poached tofu, for example, which generally mixes European and Asian method of poaching.

Over the years, fusion cuisine restaurants emerged all over Europe. Many of these restaurants were established in urban areas. In fact, you would likely find these restaurants still offering the same mixed cuisines. Urban areas are actually prime spots for fusion cuisine restaurants since these are also the areas where cultural integration is more predominant. Thus, people are more acceptable of the combined culinary dishes.

Of course, this form of cooking is not limited to Eurasian cuisines. Asian foods are also combined. You can find dishes that combine Thai food with Malaysian food or Malaysian cuisines with Vietnamese dishes. Combining cuisines of countries from the same region, however, is less challenging. It is actually easier to combine ingredients from the same region because these countries have, more or less, influenced each other in their cooking.

The Mixed Reactions to Fusion Cuisine

People have varying reactions when it comes to fusion cuisine. Those who do not favor it call it "confusion cuisine" instead of fusion cuisine. They do not approve of what they perceive as mixing incompatible ingredients. They insist that instead of creating something delectable, fusion cuisine merely results to unpalatable dishes. Admittedly, there are instances when mixing ingredients can get a little out of hand. Sometimes, the spices can overwhelm the main dish. This is actually one cause of confusion in this type of cooking technique. Over eagerness to create something innovative can result to something completely disastrous.

Chefs who are particularly loyal to their cultural heritage or roots rarely promote fusion cooking. They regard this as an insult to the culinary integrity of both cultures. People who have tried and who are trying this technique have been often accused of merely attempting to conceal their lack of skills by engaging in mixed cuisine cooking.

Trying Out Fusion Cuisine Cooking Technique

The truth is that many chefs have started to view fusion cuisine as a way to make their mark. Unfortunately, many of them end up failing. This technique is not for everyone. Determining which cuisine mixes well with one another is a daunting task. You need to know your ingredients and you may often end up going for your gut. You cannot really know what will please your customers. While you may find one dish to be particularly delightful, 10 customers may not feel the same.

So, how do you get it right? Actually, the key actually lies on your ability to find the elusive mixture that makes a great dish. This is far from being easy. There are restaurants that actually play it safe. They don't actually mix the ingredients of different cultures in one dish. Instead, they mix the cuisines in their menu. You can end up in an Italian/Indian restaurant. You don't have to deal with awful dishes. You can just choose to order an Italian meal or an Indian meal. Some people regard this as a mild form of fusion cuisine. It is actually less disastrous.

If you want to try fusion cooking, it is better that you study this technique first before you actually serve your customers with your own brand of fusion cuisine. You need to do your homework and learn about this cooking style first. Perhaps, if you do, you can definitely make it work to your advantage.
