Understanding Hot Tub Shells

Hot tub shells are the most important part to consider on your hot tub. There are other components like the heaters and pumps but these are relatively easy to replace and relatively inexpensive. However if something goes wrong with the shell you might as well replace the whole spa.

The shell surface and the understructure are sandwiched together to make the hot tub shell. The surface of the shell determines not only the aesthetics but whether the tub is UV resistant, how it will take daily use, and how stain resistant the tub will be. The understructure determines the integrity of the tub, how long it will last, and what type of weight it will support.

There are two major materials used to manufacture shells Acrylic and OAS or Olefin Acrylonitrile Styrene. Both are excellent materials with good impact resistance but there are some important differences between them.

AcrylicAcrylic comes in solid colors or marbled patterns that look like granite. It is smooth with a high gloss finish and it has a wonderful sheen that looks luxurious. It is non porous so it prevents dirt from accumulating and it is also stain resistant making maintenance very easy. You can use any type of chemical sanitizer and it is the most popular shell material choice.

There are many different types of acrylic but the end result almost always looks the same so for the consumer it is difficult to distinguish acrylic quality. A continuous cast acrylic will offer better durability and longevity.

Microban is an additive that is being added into acrylic mixes. It stops the growth of bacteria that causes odors and it makes the acrylic resistant to stain preserving the original appearance of the acrylic for years.

OASOAS is marketed as Rovel, Ultralife, and Endurol to name just a few of the different names. It is an ASA/AES terpolymer which is an acrylic blend and a less expensive alternative to traditional acrylic. It has a simplistic appearance and looks much more plastic like.

OAS is porous which makes it harder to clean than acrylic and it is only available in solid colors. Staining can be a problem and so can fading. Light colors are generally the only options because it helps reduce the noticability of water staining. With OAS you must be careful which chemicals you use.

Whichever material is used the fact remains that neither can hold the weight of water all on its own. Thats where the understructure comes in. There are several types and understanding the differences is important.

OAS understructure usually uses a thick layer of sold foam which is hardened and provides structural support. While acrylic tubs usually use a combination of acrylic, fiberglass, and other additives.

Quality tubs ensure a thick support while cheaper tubs that are cutting corners will use a lighter layer. Look for manufacturers that hand roll each layer of the fiberglass to the acrylic ensuring a quality tub where delamination wont be a problem. Delamination will cause bubbles, cracks, and blisters in the shell. OAS shells of a poor quality may also craze and develop spider cracking.

When it comes to style its all about comfort so it is critical that you choose a seating arrangement that works for you. You might want to consider getting the maximum amount of seating with good jet placement.

The lounge seat can reduce the amount of seating in the spa but most people still prefer having it. You can lay back and relax your entire body. In fact many modern tubs even offer a double lounge.

A therapy seat will give you a full body massage right from neck to feet. Its molded to the shape of a captains chair providing excellent support for the entire body. Your therapy seat should have at least 10 jets.

Footwells come in different size and it should hold as many seats as the number of bodies your tub will hold. The footwells should have jets that will soothe the feet and calves an area too often neglected.

Many manufacturers have incorporated some very neat features right into their shells which are very appealing providing another level of comfort and safety.

1. Lighted Grab Bar strategically place to provide additional lighting, ambiance and added safety.2. Grab Bar provides another level of safety.3. Underwater Lighting is necessary allowing one to safely enter and exit the spa. You can also get it in a variety of colors.4. Aquassage Pillow Will give you a great neck massage. No electricity required as it is activated by water.5. Pillow These form fitted pillow provide a comfortable relaxing position for you.6. Ice Buckets Is a great way to keep your wine, pop, or other refreshments nice and cold.7. Snack Area Provides a convenient place for you to stock upon snacks while you soak.8. Independent Seating Controls Each seat has their own controls so every guest can find their own personal level of comfort.

Hot tub shells are where it all begins so be sure you choose the right shell for you.
